No V11 Sport / LeMans came with carbs.

V11 Sport / Lemans black engine cases started in 2002.

Last year for carbs on a spine-frame was the Sport 1100 of 1996.

The fuel injected 1100 Sport Corsa of 1997/1998 came with black engine cases.  All other Sport 1100s had silver.

No.

Carbs were "available" on Californias through 1997.  I've seen carb'd 1996 bikes, but haven't personally seen a carb'd 1997.

As mentioned, last year for carbs on the spine frame sporty bikes was 1996.

V11 Sport / Lemans black engine cases started in 2002.

And then flaked off sometime around mid-2003...

Funny. Is that what really happen to those cases? Also, by V11 I meant the 1100cc engine. I think there is a V11 model too (right?), but I just meant as any Guzzi in general that would gave a black engine with carbs (doesn't sound like that exist) that would fir a G5. Just dreaming out loud. My bike is in a million pieces right now so I just wonder about my options / future options.

My general thought here is: should I buy a bike with the engine I want, ride it this summer, keep restoring the G5, then when it's time for the engine, take the black V11 engine, sell whichever donor bike it came from (without the engine).

Again, just throwing stuff out there. At this point I'm just getting discouraged as it seems like I'm never going to finish my G5 I'm time to ride this year!

It's just panic as the weekend aproaches and I look at my all over the place parts!

Thanks again for the replies.

Just to be clear, in most cases "V11 engine" refers to the V11 Sport and LeMans of 1999-2005.

If you're looking for another 1064 cc Guzzi engine, it's usually referred to by the bike it was in:  California,  Sport 1100, Breva, California Vintage.

They're each different.

If you're just looking for an engine to shoehorn into a G5, then any California 1100 engine should work.  They're the most common, anyway.

Front covers are different on the Sport 1100 and V11 Sport, so using one of those in a Tonti requires some parts exchange.

Sounds like a carb'd California 1100 engine from the 1990s is what you're looking for...

Would the engine off this bike fit?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Moto-Guzzi-California-III-/201332065019?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2ee05382fb&item=201332065019

Also, are the chrome valve covers and gold nuts on the engine factory, or were those added later? I probably wont do this, I'm just learning models and such at this point.\

Thanks again.

I have one of those cases.  It looks like a combination of things happened -- the case was not properly cleaned or outgassed before coating and there was contamination in the aluminum castings.  This affected the adhesion of the coating and caused separation and peeling.  The coating also seems to have reacted to whatever the contaminant was and bubbled and curdled.  The end effect is like sooty oatmeal hardened on it.

One fix is to strip the case, sandblast and delouse it completely, and then bake it for a while to encourage whatever is in the aluminum pores to gas off.  That's what I plan to do with this one.

They warted up right away -- as soon as they got hot the first time.  So if this one isn't showing the bubbles, it's either not part of the problem run or the case was redone/replaced.  I buy them, sometimes for the cost of shipping only, and clean them up.  In my opinion it's just a cosmetic flaw.  You can still use them for builds.
