A good day a vintage bike ride

  Sunday was a decent day,chilly but sunny. a good day to flog the Brit Bike hot rod on the back roads....

     

  After some brisk riding on rural roads I stop to fuel up. I go to kick over the engine and the lever falls off....Oh dear...I use folding XS650 Yamaha kick levers, done it on several other Triumphs, but I changed the securing method thinking it was an improvement....Not! No problem, it's easy to run and bump a 385 pound bike, Not!  Asked a  guy push me but the bike still won't start...Seems the electronic ignition conversions won't do a bump start because the engine isn't spun over  fast enough to engage the circuits...,maybe if two guys pushed it would have been  ok...
  Call the bride.....Kick lever is now securely mounted....

Rare enough occurrance, sure, but another nod towards distributors and magnetos.

I dig the bike - one of my favorite front brakes ever.

Yes, EI's need good voltage, you running batteryless? At any rate, points will start on very low voltage, even batteryless if you have the cap in there.

Both my old Trumpets, my Norton and my MG TD still run points. As a matter of fact, of all the bikes in my sig line, the ONLY one that ever stranded me in 40 years of riding was my 2006 Triumph when the igniter crapped out on a ride.

Feels good to get that old Brit iron out doesn't it? Those bikes seem so small, light, and spindly compared to a Goose or the new stuff. So that bike is pre-oif, front brake says 69 or 70. Tiger or Bonny?

 I'm east of Rochester about 20 miles. The bike has a battery and it was fully charged. It's a quirk of the Pazon and maybe the Boyer electronic units. The quirk is the price of having a fully digital ignition with no sloppy advance mechanism... And a stock kicker doesn't fall off  ;D

               We used to call that a separate-construction, model. So called because the engine gearbox and clutch case were not integrated, as in later models. I don't miss mine. Congratulations on keeping yours so long ;D

 Nope, it's 1970 engine, unit construction ..I recently built the bike from a pile of mismatched parts so it's history is only about 9 months... ;D

I had a zener diode leave me stranded out past Park City, UT on the BSA.  Got the "Bent Valve" trophy for that club ride.  Gets mighty quiet up in the Wasatch.

I could have sworn that gearbox looked "separate" :-[ :-[ but come to think of it, the timing cover on mine did not have the round fitting (over the points?) on the top front corner. Should have looked closer before rushing to judgement ;D
