Converting a Convert
«
on:

Hello everyone,
I have in the past owned a Le Mans 1000 and am considering buying a Convert 1000.
My question is, is it possible to convert one of these bikes to a manual transmission?
Are the frame, crankshaft, cases, etc. the same?
Thanks,
Dewey

It can be converted. You will need a 5 speed transmission, clutch, flywheel, lower rails, floor boards and or pegs, shift lever, brake lever, brake cable, control linkage(s), different rear drive as the gearing will be off, possibly a different drive shaft and probably a few other misc. parts. Nothing to it but time and lots of money.

It can be done but it's not cost effective. You will double your purchase price with the cost of the conversion.
Transmission
flywheel
clutch
clutch control stuff
timing cover
drive shaft
couplers
rear drive
speedometer head or gears
shifter/linkage
perhaps other stuff that doesn't come to mind right now.
You can recover some cost selling the convert cast-offs, but they are limited interest.
In my opinion there is a crapload of 5-speed bikes out there for the same price or less. Unless your motivation is the project for its own sake, start with a more compatible donor and then double the price making your purchase better, not making it something else.

It is possible, I have done it. And not very difficult although it's much cheaper usually to sell the convert and by an 850 T3 or G5.
You will need (broadly) all the drive bits from the flywheel back except for the wheel. So that is flywheel, clutch, transmission, ujoint, shaft and rear drive unit. $$$

I assume you didn't want to make a Lemans, just a G5/1000 T-3 like bike, right?
at a minimum:
flywheel/clutch
trans w/clutch lever (rear of trans) and shifter shaft lever (on spline)
ujoint
driveshaft
coupler (singular)
rear drive
the convert already comes with a clutch lever (at hand), clutch cable, shift linkages, shift lever (foot), lower rails, place to put your feet, etc...

Thanks everyone.
I was afraid that it wouldn't be cost-effective.
I'll just continue looking.
