Removed O2 Optimzer on B11 with interesting results
« on: June 09, 2015, 04:10:56 PM »
Been running Guzzitechs o2 optimizer on my B1100 for a couple years now.   I put it on because after I put a Mistral Oval can, and pulled the DB killer, the pop off throttle was a bit much.  The O2 gadget works pretty well, in fact it did away with 99% of the popping and seems to allow the motor to work more as it should with the open exhaust.

The down side, slightly less gas milage, and an oily drip off the injector linkage  from time to time and less than perfect fueling.   But at least I could ride without the db and enjoy the sound of the engine easily!    But I got to thinking recently after talking with my local wizard tech, and the Wombat humpper from down under, echoing his thoughts, that perhaps I should pull it off and see how it runs?

I did just that.  With stock fueling and a modern map, and without  a db killer it pops more than I like on warm days.  So I put the db killer in and ran it for a few hundred miles and...wait for it....It runs noticeably stronger and with less slop than with the O2 opt/open exhaust.  So it runs stronger, has better rideability, and gets better gas milage.  The down side, and it's a minor one for me, maybe a bigger deal for others, is the bike is on the quiet side.

I do wish I could have the best of both worlds, but minus a reflash I don't think that's obtainable, so I'm giving up the cheater to gain a better running bike, better milage and more fun for me!

P.S.  This is no knock on the www.Guzzitech.com O2 Optimizer.   For a relatively small price this neat little plug and play device allows the use of aftermarket parts that would likely otherwise make ridding some Guzzis very un-fun.

The oily drip from the throttle bodies is due to the fact that at certain points of throttle opening and engine speed the horrid little plug-in is causing the engine to over fuel grossly. This will wash the bores causing increased blow-by and crankcase pressurisation which in turn leads to greater expulsion of oil into the airbox. Added benefits are increased bore and ring wear, higher fuel consumption and clogged throttle bodies and stepper that can lead to a high and erratic idle and make it very hard to tune the bike properly. This is bad enough on the 2V pushrod engine. On the 8V it can kill it stone dead in a fairly short period of time.

If you really want to make a racket you can. It's simply a matter of building a map that will allow that. It won't perform as well as a map produced with a proper exhaust but it's doable. It also doesn't have to pop and bang on the over-run. You can build that out in the map simply by chopping the fuel at 4.6 TPS down to sub-3,000rpm. It's simply a matter of finding someone who knows what they're doing.

It sounds like it's time for me to pull the O2 Optimizer off of my Breva 1100. It did seem to run better on the low end when I installed it. But the fueling feels a bit rich to me so I've been running my Staintune muffler with the DB Killer out. Guzzis sound wonderful but I'm not a big fan of loud exhausts. It would be nice to put the DB Killer in and have the bike run well. I guess not blowing the engine could be a positive too!

Thanks guys!  :thumb:

I'm not complaining.   Its running very well, and I can get accustomed to making less noise.   Don't really feel the need for a custom map, its working great now.  Like I said, I pulled the o2 and it's runs better, good enough for me.

I removed the O2 Optimizer from my Breva 1100 this afternoon. I went to get the DB Killer from my saddlebag so I could put it in my Staintune muffler. It wasn't there. Grrrr... I distinctly remember putting it in my saddlebag 3 years ago before heading out for the Ontario rally. I think I have age related attention deficit disorder.

Is it the same MC Flip ?

Ummm...I think so...I believe it was red also. I'm sure the cylinders stuck out each side just like this on this one!
