anyone here with vintage MV Agusta knowledge?
« on: June 15, 2015, 03:18:51 PM »
I'm going to rescue this from a harley shop near me.  was told it is a '62 175 with a locked motor.  owner of the shop received it from the original owner.  trying to find out more about the reason for the motor being stuck.  he told me i can have it for $1500.  obviously it wont be a quick fix by any means, so any help would be appreciated
thx

Sorry, no experience here with MVs.  You might check out some Euro classic bike mags (Borders) for parts supplies.  It looks like yours is fairly complete.  Good luck on the project.

Is a workaday 175 MV with a locked up motor REALLY worth $1500.00 ? WOW !

Tiddlers are big, lots of events open to them, and any MV is pretty. Plus that badge, logo whatever has to be among the coolest.

So Al's website is boldprecision.com-tell him I said hi.

Check out MVAgusta.net, which is sort of the equivalent of Wild Guzzi. Nice guys but--get this--they wear belts, not suspenders, and a few are even under age 60.

But there are forums on that site for questions like yours.
Good luck and report back--MV Agusta is a great historic brand, just like Moto Guzzi.

dang, at first I thought you got a free bike.  It is in the 'rare' category and looks complete.   Sometimes it's hard not to fall in love with bikes/cars.  Dang, I just gave away my Honda CL77 scrambler 305 to a start up local vintage bike business.  Needless to say, the business went down, couldn't get my bike back (okay didn't even try) because that bike was bitch.

$1500 is a lot to me, have quite a few projects going on.  that being said, its not everyday you see these for sale and they ain't making any more, let alone being in your backyard.  i will try to get it cheaper.  the owner already chromed the kickstart (ugh).  he planned on getting it started and powder coating the whole dang thing.  i did mention its in the window of a harley shop, albeit a vintage harley shop.  haven't got it yet tho.  if i do ill try your friend Aaron.  i can get $1500 just for the patina in brooklyn these days :)

Amamet, I admire your want to save an oid machine, but I will have to ask a few questions. Knowing full well what ever you decide to do is fine.

First: Do you have the space and time to work on this machine?
Second: What ever you budget for the project, double it.
Third:What will be the value when you finish the project?
Fourth:What is the plan, to restore to factory or just get it running and show it as a survivor?
Fifth:The bottom line, do it if it fits into your plan and makes you feel good, regardless of any other opinion.

I think this is the 175 OHC model, not as blancmange as you might think.

Besides, there is no "MV" in "logic". And the converse is true.

First, I'd like to rescue it from being chromed and powder coated, he already chromed the kickstarter, but I found an original one in France in the same condition as the bike
Second, whether I get to it or not, there are many people who have told me they would buy it from me any time
Third, right now,I don't have the time or money to work on it. This could be a long term project,  life isn't a race and I have other bikes
Fourth, I love to get my hands dirty and the knowledge on these bikes are out there
Fifth and finally, I plan on getting running and keeping it the way it is if I can

I don't think you're going to regret it.   Shoot, so-so Honda Cub stepthrus that were abandoned on street corners years back are selling for more than that now, so the price isn't an issue.

No matter what kind of bike, once you get hooked up with the experts, you'll find parts and expertise available.   People are into everything these day, there's lots of people ahead of you.

And the latest rage for riding local and national "Motogiros" for 250cc bikes and under is driving demand for these bikes.    Sure, people show up on BSA unit singles and Honda 160s and stuff, but you'll be sitting on top of your world with an MV in one of those events.   If you don't care for them, I guarantee that one of the people who has offered to buy the bike from you is into them .... !

Good luck!

Lannis
