How long to cool off a small block before adusting valves?
« on: June 23, 2015, 02:57:02 PM »
My riding buddy and I dropped off his 2014 V7R this AM for initial (620 mi.) service - service dept stated that it would be done today (same day). When asked how long it takes for the engine to sufficiently cool before adjusting the valves, he said  "1 1/2 - 2 hours".  Seems like a short interval to me, we used to be told to leave it sit overnight. I was a bit concerned too as we also provided him with a 'sump spacer' to be installed and he didn't know what that was or what it's function was ....

Thought/opinions?

He did give you a 30% fudge factor, so he knows the time varies.  Many shops have a big fan to hurry up the process.

But the answer is -- all the way down -- until it doesn't feel warm to the touch.

I bel most specs for this and things like engine rebuilding are determined at an ambient temp of about 68°F (20°C).

I always go with overnight cold to be safe, but a pyrometer would certainly tell you if you'd reassured long enough.

As for trusting a shop, that I can't help with, either you do or don't.
