"GUZZI" logo history
« on: June 30, 2015, 04:28:14 PM »
For someone newer to the marque, what's the story behind the "GUZZI" logo (no MOTO) ie: the Mille GT for sale in the swap meet currently.

Was this representative of a certain ownership chapter, or just a marketing idea that ran it's course?

Are you referring to the "GUZZI" print on the bar clamp?

It was something found on some miscellaneous pieces in the 1980s and 1990s.  Most notably on the handlebar clamp of Californias, Milles, etc.  It was related to the De Tomaso ownership and GBM, the restructured DeTomaso company Guzzi Bennelli Moto.

SEIMM / De Tomaso was also responsible for the 1980s "stick eagle" found on some fuel tanks and other miscellaneous parts

I've seen it in a few applications, but that was what caused me to ask.

The "stick eagle" is also sometimes referred to as "the bat", usually meant as a poke at DeTomaso.

I have it on my calf.  Galen, the Maine MGNOC rep has it across his back.  Another young lady who attends rallies has it on the small of her back (how sexy is that).

SEIMM was the era ( 1966-1972) when Moto Guzzi was in receivership due to massive losses and was assigned a Control Management Group ( Italian Govt originated ) to help it transition out of stormy financial times . They accomplished that by 1972 and quickly sold the business to Detomaso., The SEIMM name was left untill 1988 when Detomaso regrouped  Moto Guzzi and Benelli into GBM( Guzzi Benelli Moto)  which you can see on the ID plate on the steering neck on bikes from 1989 on

Interesting...so they get credit for the Classic Eldo/Ambo design and getting California to spec them as their bike of choice?

The design credit goes to Carcano and Todero, the Berliners for selling them to US police forces.

Like Charlie says , credit  for the Loops goes ( largely) to Carcano and Todero , not to forget Lino Tonti, who was the main instigator and hot rodding party behind the V7 Monza speed records..that put Guzzi on the map on a larger scale due to their high speed accomplishments. The credit for the  California police agency successful pitch  goes to Ing. Michele Bianchi , who was their sales director at the time. The Berliner organization was definitely impressive. As a teen, I was fortunate enough to make a couple trips there to pick up bikes and parts  as a hanger on with a Brooklyn shop. Being inside their seemingly huge facilities packing everything  from Guzzis, Ducatis, Nortons, Betas, CZ's Jawas as well as tons of parts still feels like a dream after over 40 years.

Interesting the highest Moto Guzzi production occurred in 1971 during the recievership period.

ya, you

although I don't do myself any favors. I've had to switch parking places with a co worker, as I could see my bike from my desk. That is NOT a recipe for success.
