Installing Dyna III distributor
« on: July 04, 2015, 01:36:39 AM »
I have my motor set at TDC, but I'm a bit confused on the correct way to install the distributor.  I'm also confused on how to set the rotor.  Any help is good, thanks

If I recall correctly to install the distributor the left hand cylinder is set to the static timing mark, a thin line on the flywheel before TDC, on a V7 Sport the static line is about 5 teeth of the ring gear away from TDC. On a 850T I think it is considerably further away but can't tell you how many teeth for sure, the line is a very thin 'cut' on the face of the flywheel.

Check Guzziology but I recall the distributor is held with the notch in the face of the casting that accepts the plastic cap facing to 9:00, the notch in the distributor cam that accepts the rotor is set at 5:00, as the distributor meshes with the gears on the cam it will rotate to 6:00. Your in.

At this point you attach the plastic ring over the distributor cam post and align the white line of the plastic ring to the white line on the fixed component of the Dyna III module.

If you don't have a copy of the Dyna III instructions I am pretty sure I have a copy, I can email you a scan if you need them.

Cheers

Jim

If the dizzy is out of motor, set up TDC on left cyl, turn rotor to LH sensor, line up lines on sensor & rotor. Slide in dizzy watching how far rotor rotates, pull it out, rotate rotor the distance it moved back that amount.
Slide in dizzy, marks should line up close enough to time the bike.

If dizzy is in motor and you are installing Dyna 3. set up TDC on LH cyl, install rotor so marks on rotor and sensor line up on LH cyl. This will be close enough to time the bike.

Just a quickie refresher, LH cylinder is the cylinder when looking from the front of the motor?

I think left is the cylinder on the left side as you straddle the bike. and :1: on checking Guzziology . Did it that way in the past and it was 99%  spot on when checked timing with a strobe gun later
