Yeah, it's only 87F here in The Hills today, but the damned dew point is 75F !!!

Makes for miserable outdoor activities. And, makes one thankful for the miracle of air-conditioning!

How'd you old gits make it without A/C ?

Here in The Ozarks, high dew points aren't uncommon in the summertime. Never much fun, though. Any time the dew point gets over 60F this time of year, it starts getting real uncomfortable.

When that dew point gets over 70, it starts getting down right miserable.

We didn't have AC until '74 or '75. 6 kids a single income family. Never even thought it was an issue<shrug>

We get dew points around 70 for weeks on end on the summertime. After a week of that crap, a day with the dew point
below 60 is heavenly!

We've been mostly in the 70's in Michigan. Today was a heat wave of upper 80's, but we haven't seen 90 in two years in

. Tomorrow is back in the 70's again. My house won't heat up enough to turn on the air if shut up. Hoping to make it all summer without it on. It's in the mid to low 60's at night. Last week was low 50's at night. I can take this as the air has been incredible for motoring around on the bike. I guess you could say we make up for our winters in the summer.

High 40's tonight in the hills where I live, low-70's tomorrow, with no discernible humidity. But we'll get our first snow in the next 5-6 weeks, so I'll be crying then. The road up 14,000' Mt Evans finally opened last week for the summer (which is really late). They normally close it the day after Labor Day, so it'll be a very short season this year.

So, grew up in Phx. For many years we did not have AC, only swamp coolers. Named because when the temps get up over 115F they turn your house into a swamp. Yes, they get the temp down to 85, but, at >90% humidity. As kids we didn't notice that much but I still remember my parents just lying down on the tile floor where the cooler was blowing. Too miserable to do much of anything. And car had no AC either. And yes, people died. As teenagers we would go play golf when it was over 110F. The golf pro would check we had water and let us play for free. He also kept tabs on us (we were the only ones on the course :( ).

When I went to college (West Point, just north of NYC) there was no AC in the rooms. Heck, not even any window screens. And the summers was when we did military training. Also stationed in KY. Lived in quarters with no AC. The housing had a huge fan in the attic that drew through the house. Sounded like an airplane taking off. Marginal results. Went back to NY, still no AC (1980's). We did break down and save some pennies for a window AC in the bedroom.

What got me the most were those days that were hot, humid AND no wind at all. At least when the temp is under 95 a breeze will be cool.

When it is over 115 you don't want the wind to blow cause it is like a blast furnace. Just try to find shade, drench yourself with water and lie down.

In Washington State we have had a nice heat wave. Many people are adding A/C to their heating systems. I have had lots of work...

They should look at the dewpoint numbers. Most of that "heat wave" was running 52-54°, which is right in the "very comfortable" range. Now we're up to 58°, but today's high forecast is 74°, so I think I'm going to be able to make it through the day without taking refuge somewhere with AC.

Of course this is in Seattle. East of the mountains it's a different climate, but people there are more likely to have AC already.

I just rode across the States from San Diego to Maine, most route 40 East and I was prepared for the heat of the desert states of Eastern California, Arizona and New Mexico.

However, the humidity on the rest of the ride was brutal. From Texas through Oklahoma, Arkansas and into Tennessee I could not drink enough water and Gatorade, I was always wet with sweat, just oppressive. The dew points stayed high all the way into New England.

Be careful out there.

I just got back from a week and half in Colorado and New Mexico. Came back last night and it's triple digit heat.

Was nice and cool, Rocky Mountain High.

Now back in the sweat-lands.
