Redneck Escape Ramp

Without a wheelchair ramp I cannot get into and out of our house.  Getting out could be the critical part and, about a month ago, we contracted to have a proper ramp built. The day before the work was to start the folks at the Veterans Administration said "Save your money. We will built the ramp".  WHEN? Next week, next month, six months from now, next year, when? Our son and some family friends decided enough was enough.  Not much but now I have a fighting chance.

  The VA on this island has been good to me but overworked as they are they don't understand the meaning of timely.
 They offered me an electric mobility scooter, I agreed.  Something more than a year later it arrived.
  I see that you can launch unassisted albeit with something of a bump at the bottom, but getting back in looks like a pretty strenuous
 effort without help.  A pair of railings might help.
  To get to the ATM is a rise up a dozen steps but they have a ramp.  Fortunately there are rails on both sides and I can pull myself up.

We gave it a test run about an hour ago.  Worked-well-sort of.  Emergencies only. should be better than shoveling me down the steps.

As an escape-only ramp, that'll be a good one, you'll be a long way from the fire before you stop ... !    But a real access ramp will have a 1:12 slope (I've built a few for folks), so for your steps you're looking at going about 25' out from the top to get the right slope ... Seems a lot but anything steeper will be hard to navigate .... I think a Honda 90 engine cleverly engineered onto that chair would be a good thing!

I put in one steeper than that for a friend - he put a truck winch at the top and hardwired an extension cord into the remote control, attached a harness to the chair.

I was thinking a tilt bed approach would be good.  Put a hydraulic post at the low end, scoot onto it and make it the high end.  If you put the fridge in the right place you'll always have a beer when you get home.

After the test run I hope I never have to use it.    That ride is ATGATT.  Last week the VA contractor took the measurements so maybe something will happen soon.    If we get the ramp I'll see you guys at the NC rally end of the month.

My neighbor had a ramp built, and here in the People's Republic, the building inspectors are all over so that people aren't shafted.  Wood is indeed slippery when wet so some tarpaper would help.  Hopefully the VA will show up soon to get 'r done up to code but the interim job looks practical.   Good luck with it all.

Adhesive "boat deck" gription sheeting would go a long way to helping out. Makes going up backwards - if one's arms are up to it - much simpler too.

Absolutely - glad you did, if you hadn't someone would have had to.

Joking and joshing about how to get around, motorize his wheels, etc, when facing what he was facing.    He really knew how to face life with courage, the right way.

You know what I bet?    I bet that on this trip he's on now ....
