homemade tool to remove the crankshaft ring nut

I read in an old thread that you can make a tool to remove the crankshaft ring nut using a harbor freight deep impact socket.
I own a Guzzi,so,I would rather not have to spend $50.00 on a tool I'll use once. 
I would like to assemble all tools needed for the replacement of the timing chain on my 1000SP.

If someone has a used tool for sale please P.M. me.


What size impact socket would I need to buy?

Also what size gear puller do I need to buy to pull the sprockets?

I'm going to the Big City on Sat. so it'll be a chance to stop by Harbor Freight.

First of all make sure it's one of the nuts that require the special tool, it may be just a regular hex.
For my V11 Sport I used a regular 3/4" drive socket (I think 32mm). The 3/4" square slips right over the long shaft.
I ground two flats on the outside of the socket and used a 12" Crescent wrench.
If you need to make a special wrench start off with a 3/4" drive socket and grind out the space between the pegs.

If you feel the need you can weld a 1/2" drive deep socket to the top to accept a torque wrench.

you don't need a gear puller. once the nut is off it comes right off the shaft, both crank and cam. and oil pump, don't loose the woodruff keys (crank and oil pump).

you can change the castle nut on the crank with a regular hex nut (Harpers, MGcycle) and use a 32mm deep socket after that.
if you do so the castle nut can be hammered off with a drift.
