Valve adjustment intervals
« on: July 31, 2015, 07:30:49 PM »
Bike is my 2008 1200 Sport, with the 2v BB 1151 pushrod engine. I have religiously performed the valve adjustment at 6000 mile intervals (or sooner) since day one.  I'm now at nearly 58,000 miles.  At the moment, I'm riding the Griso and R100GS until I can take time to check/adjust the Sport's valves.  She's right at 6000 miles since last adjustment.

I've noticed that every time I've adjusted valves on this bike, the gap normally opens up a few .000 inch.

Have any of  you with older 2vBB machines (BNS12) extended your valve adjustment intervals to, say, 9000 miles, since nothing seems seriously out of adjustment every 6000 miles?  I don't mind doing the valves at the interval called for by the mfg ...... just curious.

You can probably leave it way longer but it's so easy to do why not just do it?

Good point!  I keep waiting for a rainy day to spend some garage time, but after the wettest May/June I can remember, we've had exceptionally great riding days thru much of July here in NE Ohio.  First nasty day, I promise ...... valves will be checked/adjusted.

Correct me if I am wrong but just because a bike hits the mile marker for a valve check or adjustment doesn't mean you need to park it.  I wouldn't ride across the country before the check but it shouldn't stop you from riding it if you are going to check it soon.

Yes.  I usually get to it about every 10k.  Happens to coincide with the maintenance I do prior to longer trips.

I have found that whether I check them every oil change or at the longer interval the valves are at the same spot, just a couple thou off.
