Not sure what the reason for legislation on this is. Splitting traffic is just standard practice here in Ca and never been an issue so why do they feel the need to come up with some arbitrary set of rules written by someone who doesn't ride to fix what isn't broken?  I guess its because all our other issues have been resolved and now we can sweat the small stuff

I just noticed what I interpreted as a side effect of lane splitting.

I've been in the car on the 405 (LA), and the splitters and I all survived.  No close calls. Other cars were the problem.

But Sat AM, on a remote two-lane road, in my car, a motorcyclist behind an oncoming other car pulled out to pass as we two cars approached other.

I was surprised and confused.  What was he thinking?

My thought is that he was in 'lane splitting' mode.  Hit that yellow line, go between cars.  They will move for me; that is what lane splitting is for.

This was not one of the 'beanie'-topped, line hugging indimidators.  This was an HD dresser, AGATT.

????  indeed! No matter what the law is, that's just plain illegal passing. It is now, and always has been, impossible to 'lane split' if there is only a single lane in your direction of travel. ATGATT or not, the helmet is empty!

Much of this is in response to people complaining about lane splitters so rather than face continued pressure it was easier to enact some legislation to make it legal by an explicit law. The law also establishes a right of way in case some sled driver decides to impede your progress for no apparent reason. As it is right now, sled drivers do all kinds of things and the rider has no recourse and has very little protection of the law. Like most of these things, there is good and bad sides but overall this will go a long way to paving the road for other states to follow.

Sitting on the highway along the Columbia in 100 dregree heat it would have been nice to legally split lanes because traffic was held up by flagment for some paving. At least we could have gotten up front and been first to get moving air over the engine.

My understanding is that there is no law against "lane sharing" so you can do it on a single lane.  I've done it for about 20 years only when traffic is stopped.  You have to be careful not to ride in the bicycle lane which will get you a ticket.  The only people I've ever seen get pulled over were weaving about 70 mph when traffic was about 30.  That is just reckless driving IMHO.  Darwin becomes involved soon...

California's budget is on track for multibillion dollar surpluses in the years ahead, the Legislature's budget analyst said Wednesday in an upbeat assessment of the state's fiscal picture.

"We now find that California's state budget situation is even more promising than we projected one year ago," said the report from the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office. "The state's budgetary condition is stronger than at any point in the past decade."

The projection represents a stunning turnaround for a state that only a few years ago had a $26 billion deficit.

Priuses (Priusi?) are the scariest car on the road out here IMHO. Granted, this has died down a bit but when those things first hit it big, you could guarantee that any freeway ride would result in it least one Prius quickly changing lanes into or out of the carpool lane across double yellows, no signal. I'm not sure if the dealerships were telling them "oh those double yellow lines only apply to regular cars, not you" or what.

I was talking with a coworker who rides about this a few years back and we were joking that there should be a "busy saving the planet - watch for lane change entitled driver" warning sticker on the rear window. Turns out our boss who was within earshot and heard the whole thing, had just bought a Prius. A third coworker told us later. Oh well, life's too short to give up joking around over somthing as trivial as a good review and a raise 

(He never mentioned it, got a good review and a raise,  confirming to me that he was one of "them". I think we might have broken a bad habit that day)

There is a law against sharing a lane with a passenger vehicle (no law against sharing it with a motorcycle). If a passenger vehicle (car, truck, commercial vehicle, farm tractor, whatever) is occupying the single lane, then no other vehicle (even a motorcycle) can share that lane with them. This was discussed in the CHP document that ended up getting pulled off their website, if I recall properly.

Ha ha, that article is misleading - if not a lie by omission.

"Budget surplus" just mean we can stop borrowing money each fiscal year to keep the state running - that's IF stocks, real estate continue their trend to the moon & other rosy assumptions materialize.

Meanwhile CA STILL has a MOUNTAIN of debt accrued over years...



...not to mention massive unfunded liabilities that are outpacing revenue growth - so add to that another $20,000 per resident. 

Not to worry, we will figure at a way to receive a Federal bailout... IOW a way to make YOUR state pay...only sucker's play by the rules...

I do it frequently. It's great just to be able to get the front of each traffic light. It's a time saver - and I get clear road ahead every time.

While this legislation, if passed, here in CA, would be sort of a non-event, I think many other states are looking to it as a model or precedent. As to the revenue-raising possibilities: Think about what would be required to issue a citation to a motorcyclist doing, let's say, 25MPH over the speed limit between lanes. It would have to be motorcycle officer in pursuit - or some sort of camera enforcement. I can't see revenue being a motivator here.

I think 15MPH over is reasonable. Some lane-sharing motorcyclists seem to think they should try for the speed limit (65) even when traffic is nearing standstill - a 15MPH-over law will probably result in 25MPH-over being practiced and tolerated.
