MD/DC Rally coming up in a few weeks ....
« on: August 13, 2015, 02:36:04 PM »
..... Do we know if we're still camping on the far end of the Little Orleans campground away from the pavilion an' all, or will we be able to pitch tents closer to the center of the rally?

If we're still way out back, I'm bringing a small shovel with me ... the 1/2 mile hike to the carzey is a little much sometimes ....

I looked at the campground web site. Seems all the cabins are very fancy. Anything more rustic?

Cabins?

No.   All the cabins are $100 - $150 and are like motel rooms.

I think my wife may have helped design them ....

From the MGNOC rally calendar: http://www.mgnoc.com/rally_calendar.html

Sep 25 to Sep 27, 2015
    MARYLAND/D.C. MGNOC RALLY

Little Orleans Campground, Little Orleans, Maryland. Pancake and sausage breakfast Friday and Saturday. Wild Bill's Chili and Hot Dogs Saturday Evening. Continental Breakfast Sunday morning. Pre registration: $30 before September 1st, $35 at the door. Contact Maryland/D.C. MGNOC Rep, Bill Sharp for details or directions. 410-551-6939. bnsharp@verizon.net

For more details, probably best to call or email Bill.  As far as I know the plan is the same as last time.  And Lannis, if I recall correctly there was a portapot at the entrance to the the loop, I assume it will still be there this time so the shovel should not be necessary.

See you all there!

This sounds interesting, never been to this location, and haven't ridden through PA this season yet.  Cabin could persuade wife to join me possibly.  We shall see.

By the way, when you send your check to Bill to pre-register (you ARE preregistering so that the rally guys will know you're coming and cook accordingly?) the Zip Code for Severn, MD is 21144.   Only 4 digits are showing in the MGNOC ad .....

Two motels approx. 14? miles away in Hancock - Super 8 and Best Value IIRC. There's also a B&B approx. 8 miles away. http://www.townhillbnb.com/

Pending Bill's approval, I plan to lead a group ride via mostly secondary roads to Winchester Motorsports on Saturday morning. Lunch at the Woolen Mills Grill: http://woolenmillsgrill.com/ and then a more direct route back to the rally.

I approve!  if that counts for anything.   You picked some beautiful roads I'd never seen for last year's ride up to Everett.

I'm more familiar with the roads down around Winchester and Berkeley Springs, so I'm looking forward to seeing if there's some I've never been on before.   But even the worst of them are good .....

Been close ... we ride every year from Wardensville up 259 to Gore, then up to Gainsboro on the back roads to cross 522, then up Siler Rd (county 600) to Glengarry, WV to shoot clays at the Peacemaker Range, but that's a little south of Winchester Grade.

But if the roads are anything like those, it'll be fun .... !!

I was on several of those yesterday on the Griso.  Kathi has a quarterly lunch in Hagerstown with an old army friend, and, on whim, I rode up that way to say hi, too.  Actually, that was only an excuse to test my new Givi tank bag ...

... but, yes, that was an excuse, too.

I just wanted to ride to clear my head after a week-plus in Atlanta.  :bike-037:

Will say (what Charlie undoubtedly well knows, i.e.) that not all inviting roads here are good m/c roads, at least not on a Griso.

Coming south on Back Creek Road (7) -- a great one! -- I took a right at Shanghai onto Hampshire Grade Road (7/13) that goes up, over Third Hill Mountain and through the Sleepy Creek WMA, where becomes Shanghai Road (13/5) and joins Winchester Grade Road (13 at Greenwood.

A Stelvio or V7 would have been a better choice for a mount for this (poorly) paved cowpath.

But otherwise, Lannis, you are right, all pretty darn fine.  If, instead of turning off Siler (plus) Road to go to Glengary, you ride on to Apple Pie Ridge Road and wiggle a few more over to Winchester Motosports.  BTW, had lunch with John Wells at the Woolen Mills Grill  -- http://woolenmillsgrill.com -- the other day.  Quite fine.  Wish they served breakfast.

Yeah, Hampshire Grade/Shanghai Rd. is freakin' rough, even on a dual-sport bike. I won't be taking the group on that.

Thanks for the report on the Woolen Mills Grill. I've heard the same from a few other folks.

So, will you be coming to the rally this year, Bill?

Yes ... I think .. I'll be there.

Kathi may take our Atlanta "eldercare week," which had conflicted, and, if so, I'll day trip over.

BTW, Kathi and I drove by the Woolen Mills Grill on the way to church.  Did not know they served an a la carte brunch on weekends, so we came back later.

http://woolenmillsgrill.com/brunch/

Kathi pronounced her omelet quite fine; I wouldn't feed the sausage gravy to a GITMO detainee.  Oh ... wait a minute, they don't eat pork, anyway.     Seriously, as bad as I've had anywhere.  And, the biscuit was a worthy third-rate, too.

Now, that ringing endorsement out of the way, they didn't charge for me it, and I had pancakes that were mighty fine, with heated syrup, too.

Seriously, unless one is a connoisseur of white gravy, all was good.  Plus, they said "brunch" included regular lunch items, not just breakfast stuff.  And, friendly staff, nice atmosphere, and patio dining if desired.

If you haven't already done so, Charlie, you may want to give 'em a call as seating of larger groups can be problematic.  Outside and a larger (rather barren) room available, but inside somewhat limited.

Bill
