Yesterday I was out on my '04 Breva 750 traversing Colorado 14 west of Fort Collins. 

Stopped near Gould (east of Walden) to have a protein bar and some water.

As I approached the Breva to take off again, a youngish guy (probably under 60) was there looking at the bike...

He said "A 750! What a big motor to put in such a small bike!"

Bet he thought it had at least 100 horsepower.

And I thought this was going to be about Belgians, Friesians, or Clydesdales. Or Percheron.

I've only ever ridden a Belgian, bareback. Like riding a big furry couch.

I think a lot of people think that any street motorcycle that's not a huge cruiser is small.  I rode my Mille to a neighbor's house recently, and the wife came to the door and said "Oh you have a little street bike."  It sounded really strange to me to hear her call a 500+ lb. 1,000 cc motorcycle "little".

Had that happen to me recently.   Fay and I were getting ready for a ride to Tennessee on the Norton 850, and had ridden it into town to pick up some stuff.   

A friend of ours who rides pillion on her husband's Gold Wing saw us and came over.   "What are you two doing on that LITTLE bike?" she says.    Getting ready for a 1000 mile ride through Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, we said.   "Are you going to do it on that little bike?   I could NEVER do that .... " she said.

I've said it before - the Marketeers have won, and won big.   The US motorcycle consumer population has been hypnotized, bamboozled, and hoodwinked into thinking that you're a weak, limp-wristed wannabe if you're not packin' 103 inches and 900 pounds of roaring rumbling thundering horsepower between your legs ....

The ride was great, however!

Two things
Some people find my CalVin small compared to bikes they ride on or with. They are usually surprised by how fast and wonderful it handles, it helps when chickencock aka Heather is on the back and we walk away from others on the ride, merly the bike being held at speed through the turns.

The other is the fact I'll happily bail on my 72 Eldo and go wherever, never worried about a breakdown, I carry a spare clutch cable though. The cable was helpful about two weeks ago, I was on a 300 mile round trip and half way through I had to use it. Easy fix and on the road again!

I think the Guzzi exhaust sound makes the uninformed think they are very powerful motors, at least they do when they hear my T-3 with the very expensive Emigo mufflers.

Have you seen the Tonnage some of those poor bikes have to haul around??

It takes ALL 103 ci to haul around 500-600+ lbs of pirate

Saw a couple today that resembled that remark on a ape-hangered, peanut-tanked, chopperish monstrosity.  They were definitely closer to 600 than 500, but thankfully they mitigated their combined mass just a little bit by riding with a complete lack of gear.
