That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

Ouch! Glad they could tell the tale!
A local bumblebee GS got disassembled from the engine forward in a brown bear collision on the way home from a run up the haul road to Prudhoe Bay. He survived and shipped the bike to Montana for reconstruction. It's home now after a year in surgery and he's planning his next trip.

Been there, done that, it f---ing hurts! Foot black and blue up to mid ankle, bear scrambled away with bad headache.

Wow, they got T boned mid section. I would guess their bike is totaled. Surprised all 3 survived. Bears are common @ Yellowstone.
I almost hit a small bear the same way in norCal coming out of dry grass on my LM IV. I heard something but couldn't see it until it darted out on my right in full run mode. Both me and a car coming the other way stopped in time to miss it. Figured if I hit it I would have gone flying over the bars head first.
