Gear dog wear
« on: August 30, 2015, 08:12:47 AM »
New to the forum. New to MG. New inside a transmission. This trans was working fine but busted it's pawl spring. While I'm in here does this look like normal wear for a 20k '72 Eldo?  If not where the heck can I get a new dog?  Doesn't look like Harpers or MGcycle has them in stock. I have additional pics but this is probably the most representative. [/img]

Thanks in advance for any help.

Paste the picture after the url/img icon.  Not between as I was doing the other day.

The gears are undercut from the factory if that is what you see.

As far as MG Cycle, what you see is what you get. Unless you have already spoken with Curtis, don't count Harpers out just yet.  If that doesn't pan out, your resources list is far from being exhausted. Board contributor Charlie ( Antietam Classic Cycle) is a good start, followed by Zydeco Racing ( Guzzi Gearbox specialist), then you got Eisch Ent., long time Guzzi dealer (somewhere in Ohio),  Moto International in Seattle. in Europe: Stein Dinse, Teo Lamers, Agostini,  and on. Rounded dogs only shift ok at lower rpm's, upper range you have to kick em in gear.

The dogs or teeth in the photo are undercut to hold the gears in engagement....That feature  looks ok but as mentioned above the rounded edges may cause shifting problems..

Ha!  Ok thanks folks. That's some good info for me to work with. This trans seemed to be relatively fine. Relatively meaning (from what I've read here) typically "agricultural". Which I actually don't mind.  But it doesn't jump out of gear or anything like that.  So at any rate while I'm in the box I thought I would just see if any of you saw the pic and said "whoa brother you better replace that dog"!

Thanks for the comments!

I'd certainly replace it.
