Didn't make a huge mess this time.
« on: September 01, 2015, 04:22:02 PM »
No big deal .... oil and filter change.  Tranny and final drive lube change.  I do wish the two engineers (1) the one who located the tranny drain plug, and (2) the one that designed the exhaust system, had coordinated their activities.  I made a small trough out of a used Agip bottle, and for 99 percent of the lube, it actually made it into the pan instead of the floor.  OTOH, maybe they did coordinate, and the final solution was as good as it gets.

I use aluminum foil to keep the mess off the exhaust.  It's 'interesting' when I change the fluids with a still hot engine.

Must've been wrong!  The floor in the garage is almost as clean (or no dirtier) than before I changed lubes.  Of course, I now need to buy another couple rolls of the blue industrial grade paper towels!

Sounds like you missed out on all the fun.  Cleanup should always take longer than the actual doing.....

the drain plug location might have an engineered purpose like it's the lowest spot on the inside of the box.

I dunno!  I've had enough fun cleaning up messes when I forgot a final phase of the job.  Reminds me of when I forgot to replace the fill plug on my W650 Kaw.  Not only did the engine sound like a huge pump, it acted like one and blew oil skyward and coated the opened garage door with lots of lube!  I'm only glad I wasn't sitting on the bike when I fired her up.  Today was a snooze by comparison.
