I have tended to use choice #3, since my local shops (now that I'm no longer in the business) are not a reliable source (10w60, doncha know). However, the outfit I've been using now no longer is in business, and since I'm having to look around, I thought I'd see what others are doing.

PLEASE, this is not a thread about whether a given weight is needed, or whether a given brand is best - it's about how to best buy a consumable we all need. In my case, I do 3 or 4 oil changes a year to keep up (20 - 30,000 miles a year), so I have to buy a fair bit of the stuff; cost, availability and service are the question!

The 10 60 was stupid expensive locally and AGIP dropped it on my doorstep for 11 a liter.
Otherwise I love my local independent shop.

10W60 for the Stelvio comes in a box in the mail.

20W50 for the BSA and Norton twins comes from Advance Auto, as does the 5W30 for the Festiva and the 15W40 for the 1000SP.

20W for the Farmall Cub, and the 30W for the two Fergusons come in big tubs from NAPA.

Two stroke oil for the tillers, string trimmers and such comes from NAPA in little bottles.

I buy a case at a time when and where I find the good stuff and worry about it every few years.  The last stuff was bought in Seattle and travelled as checked baggage to Sitka.

Castrol 20W50 for the Guzzis comes from the local auto parts shops. Plus ZDDP additive from Redline, same. Torco 50 for the BSA from Raber's in San Jose, excuse to go down and visit (Guzzi content -- when Bob got rid of the inherited Guzzi parts, said Guzzi parts went to Harper's.) Filters from The Usual Suspects, need to order more.

Actually, I didn't assume that, I just disclosed that I needed to do so. I am also curious to know if people are buying on the Internet even if they could by locally, regardless of the type of oil they need...

I buy locally(WalMart) but only use dino oil.  Only buyers of specific syn. oils would consider internet for buying unless they lived in the boonies.

Internet. Most counter guys give you the roll eye when you ask for 10-60.

Adventure motorsports in Pensacola. they carry the agip 10w 60 for about the same price as the other brands available through Internet suppliers.

I vote Internet/Cheapest as it's the closest to reality.

FOR ME:

1. Guzzi - I buy a case (or split a case with someone) every couple of years. My Guzzi usage tends to be 1 oil change per year, so 12 bottles last me for YEARS.

2. Ducati - tried buying local (FBF, idiots didn't even sell me the right viscosity first time) so I switched to M1 4T purchased locally (Autozone or Cycle Gear).

3. Harley - tried buying Amsoil direct, eventually switched to M1 VT oil - purchased locally (Zone or Gear).

4. Cars - M1 Local (Zone or WallFart)


So although I answered NET, and that IS TRUE for my Guzzi... I really buy most of the rest locally.

I go to Moto International and buy it there. I am fortunate that they are about 45 minutes away from me.

I don't go into WalMarts.    Changing the oil in my Festiva today - Advance had Havoline 5W-30 on sale (with an oil filter thrown in) for $3.50 a quart ....

Except for deals like that, I order on-line.   Cheaper and way more convenient.
