Anyone here ridden the KTM 1190 or 1290 Adventure?
« on: September 17, 2015, 07:12:15 PM »

I am considering getting the KTM 1190 or 1290 Adventure bike (or a Stelvio NTX), fortunately or unfortunately to replace my Quota.
I like the Quota, but its time to get a bit more HP...
There's the Guzzi content

Any thoughts about this bike? Greatly appreciated.....

I've not ridden them.  I have a buddy with a 990 version and he said that chancing the oil was a 3 hour job, so big a hassle he has the dealer do all his maintenance.

Of course, changing the filter in my Guzzi is a two hour job...so......

I love the KTM's, but it's definitely not the service friendly machine the Stelvio is, that's for sure. The chain and difficulty of service steer me away.

I have had the 2014 KTM 1190 standard for over a year, 12,000+ miles.  I rode to Idaho from Louisiana, a year ago, met up with 3 friends in Utah, 2 K1600GTs and a Stelvio (2013, I beleive).  What would you like to know?

I did not ride much this year long distance anyway, as I started playing golf on the GolfWeek Amateur Tour in Louisiana.

The KTM is the best handling and suspension I have ever been on, with the maybe the Multistrada 1200 standard running a close second.  Super Tenere was not bad, but I modified the suspension after over a year.

The KTM 1190 with the lean sensitive ABS and TC is most likely the safest bike out there.  The 1290 I have not ridden, but they add the semi-active suspension to it.

I had a 2008 Superduke 990. A blast to ride and I kept it two years and 7000 miles. Oil changes were a pain in the butt. Otherwise mine was trouble free. I'm looking at getting the 2016 Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin for my next bike.

Dave,  The SD is a naked bike.  Why was it a pain to change oil ?

Two oil filters for one, on the 1190 the job is pretty simple.  I do have to drop the bashplate which is easy with 6 screws, mounts are undisturbed.  9000 mile between changes.

Nice fun power on the 1190.  1290 must be a real brute.  The KTM rep said without the electronics (ABS and TC plus lean sensor) you couldn't ride the 1290 Super Duke.

They are supposed to be working on a 800cc Duke PTwin with 270 degree firing, and also 1290 Super Duke Touring.

Thanks guys... Good info here, like usually.
I am a member at ADV forum, but it's better to ask likevise minds about "Brand X", than check with Orange dudes if they like their bikes.
I've read the comments on the ADV orange forum.
I guess next is a test ride with 990, 1190 and the super beast 1290.

I have test ridden a few.  The engine will leaving you grinning like an idiot.  Off the line torque is unreal.  The real question is the ergos.  They are too tall for me.

I too am looking at this class of bike - freakishly tall, overpowered, expensive but real comfy. Sat the BMW s1000xr yesterday. Worth a look if you'll be on road most of the time. As tire choice is better. Hard to find a test ride. BMW is taking a grand off for a bit which will allow for the matching underwear. After Guzzi, any of these will be a treat I think. Enjoy

I realize the SD was a naked bike...I was referring that it was a blast to ride and I'm sure the KTM 1190/1290 ADV is likewise.  As for oil changes...lots of screws/covers and a hose to get to the filters and screens. Not really hard but a lot of fiddling.

Still I liked the bike and had none of the troubles some others had with KTM's. I sold it to move on to other bikes.

Yeah, the 1190 motor is lots easier to do oil change.  Guess KTM listened to the 990 owners about how hard it was.

On the BMW S1000XR, friend bought one, but says he will sell it within a year.  Handlebars buzz at speed and the range is like 150 miles.  He rode behind me on a local ride to the only sweepers (can't reall calll them twisties) in the area.  I could hear his engine and airbox behind me int he corners, and he stayed in my mirrors.  His real bike is the K1600GTL, he likes more wind protection and greater range.

KTM makes the frames from Chromoly, think this is most of the weight savings compared to others.

P.S.  6 gallon tank is good for little over 210 miles.  I usually get around 43 mpg.  The OEM screen makes a little turbulence, I added MRA spoiler, and it fixed it for me.  I'm 5' 11" and 32" IS.
