Loose front brake rotor Stelvio
« on: September 22, 2015, 09:09:26 AM »
Posting this for Tom Kelly (tkelly) regarding his 2014 Stelvio.
The front left disc is loose (rattles when moved by hand). The right is not that loose but
Can be moved a little by hand.
Question is, is the left out of spec and needs replacement or is it still ok to ride?

The Stelvio has floating discs which should move slightly side to side.  This is to compensate for pad wear since the calipers are fixed.   If the bobbins that fit between the disc and the carrier get stuck the brakes will pulse at very slow speed braking.  It's really annoying and has led many people to think that the brakes were warped.  Make sure the movement is with the disc, not the carrier.  Safe to ride if the carrier is secure.

The care called floating, but shouldn't move by hand. let the dealer check.

On my Norge, at about 90,000 miles the buttons had become loose enough that the left outer rotor could be heard 'clacking' when I pushed the bike without the engine running. Once I figured out what the cause was, I did a brief test brake scenario, enough to activate the ABS - it was noticeable that the rotor had too much play.

Have a dealer check it, but if you can hear the outer rotor move on the buttons it's definitely time to replace them.

I had a Husqvarna 450 dirt bike with floating rotors..  The rear was so loose, it sounded like a Ducati clutch!

The rotors on the Norge are "semi-floating".  They have springs in the buttons to limit side-to-side movement.

It's the fore/aft movement that would be a problem.  Side to side movement can be expected.

My guess is the spring clips are dirty and are not keeping side pressure on the buttons.

My Sport 1100 has full floating rotors.  No spring clips, and lots of rattle.  I like 'em like that !!!

Mine moved side to side, fore, aft, up, down - the buttons had clearly seen their best day. You could grab them and move them freely in a rotational movement, which they definitely didn't have when newer. The sideways play I'm familiar with...
