MAP Updates?
« on: September 24, 2015, 08:39:59 PM »
Just curious...

What do you folks do if you live way far away
(7 hours or so) from any dealer to get any
MAP updates? Just live with it as is?

Trying to figure logistics if/when we move.

Thanks,

Jim

If it's running well... Forgedaboudit.

If it's not, make the trip.

Eventually GuzziDiag will have the solution.

Jim don't expect a lot of updates anymore, history learns that there won't be more. The v7 II had 2 updates, that is more then most other Guzzi had. I would be surprised if there is another.

What we need is an enterprising dealer who will rent their PADS equipment out to folks who live far away, and FedEx it out and back, for a price, of course.  Any takers?

And all they would need is a COUPLE OF THOUSAND DOLLARS for a security deposit each time?

(Doesn't sound like a good idea).

So?  Every time you rent a car you're taking possession of a multi-thousand dollar piece of equipment.  Why not insure the PADS rental transaction?

Cause the average dealer isn't a multi-million dollar car rental company who's very existence depends on being able to rent out multi-thousand dollar pieces of equipment to users.

A dealer probably only has ONE scan tool (not thousands), depends on using that tool themselves (can't be without it for a week each time it's loaned out), and can't go through the hassle or getting it repaired (unlikely) or replaced (more likely) if it is damaged in shipment or in the hands of the renter.

Could you imagine you loan out your one scan tool, it comes back a week late, damaged, then takes a month to settle with Fed-Ex for the cost, and meanwhile you've had to shell out the cash (or use your company credit line) to order a replacement which still hasn't arrived?

Sounds like a nightmare.

Well, maybe we need a dealer to clarify this for us.  I imagine a PADS tool to be nothing more than a small computer, some cabling, and the all-important software.  Maybe something along the lines of what pauldaytona and his guzzidiag are working on.  Couldn't a dealer acquire an extra one for renting out?

As far as I know, the pads is working online to get maps, and each update is noted by Piaggio. And it only works if there is an active dealer subscription.

To much hassle for what anyway?
Just to update a map? Just make it a nice short holiday to get it done. As I said, there aren't that much updates.

And If we figure out how to do the miu3 and 7sm maps, there is no need at all anymore.

Is that a single TB bike? anyway if you have been to a dealer for service he should have updated it. If you have Guzzidiag, you can read what map it is, and in another post I have put the maps that are available.

I'm planning to ride a 250 mile round-trip tomorrow, to have my EFI map updated to 352BV738.

Kinetic Playground, over in Tulsa, said they'd be glad to hook it up in the morning.

That means lunch on South Peoria Avenue in Tulsa.  Mmmm!   :food:

If it's just a software file, go online and search for it.

With PADS you pay your subscription and that gives you access to the dealer portal, (Some countries you get more access to more areas than others. It seems in Oz we are severely limited in what we get access to and, surprise surprise, it costs us more!) both mapping and software is downloaded online when there are updates and your subscription allows you to install the software on a limited number of computers. All of this means nothing if you don't have the PADS dongle which is identified by the software and if it doesn't correspond with the subscription won't work.

Pads is also flakey, slow and prone to crashing for no apparent reason. I hate it, it's a horrid tool. The idea of shipping a laptop and dongle around is a complete non starter for numerous reasons but why the hell would a dealer want to? We don't actually want to live in poverty. We pay for the tooling and access, it has to pay for itself.

If a dealer wanted to rent it out and charged enough money to make it worthwhile, you wouldn't want to pay the rental fee.

Of course if someone thinks different, swell, buy it along with all the goodies to make everything work and send it round robin, surely the folks on WG will make it worth your while.

I am thinking if your selling dealer would be willing he could hook your ECM to and existing bike and download the new map, remove the ECM and send to you. Of course you take the risk that you dont zap the ECU .

2012 V7C is a 2TB engine. Just checking to see if updated map is available for it. Closest and far as I know only dealer WAS in Baton Rouge. They just dropped Moto Guzzi because no one would bring their bikes in for service. So I am on my own for sure.

The 2 tb has as latest map: BC010.327.8A_3L10BN 22_MG_BREVA_NEVADA7 50_EU03°

And I think that exists from before 2012, so no need to do anything
