I never said I was smart.. IBA ride Saturday - updated with pix
« on: September 24, 2015, 09:05:55 PM »
Well, a buddy has been bugging me to help him get an IBA license frame like the one on the Norge (GC)..  so Saturday we are going to loop around SD and NE..  I'll let you know how it goes..
The route is 1154 miles so it should be plenty of buffer for a simple SaddleSore 1000.  He can do longer rides on his own later if he wants.

i am changing out my 100W driving lights for some cheap LED's.  they won't light the road but they should work fine as 'don't hurt me' lights.

Always an adventure,  You're brave doing it this time of year - lots of dark.  Just a thought ( from one who hates the slab), consider taking NE 2 east out of Alliance to Grand Island.  A scenic route in the daylight hours, and if it starts to get dark you can head south to I80.  Shouldn't impact the distance much.  Enjoy, and have a safe and successful trip!

I didn't quite get this part.  Why are you doing this?  Is it related to the IBA ride?

Hurray for adventures. This one's too straight to tempt me, though.

I would try a Twisty-750 in 24 hours. Have done 550 (but probably included 100 miles of straight). I think I could pull off a couple hundred more without any significant straight lines.

FWIW, the Twisty-750 is not a real thing, I just made that up. But what the hell, let's start it.

I have been finding that if I leave the 100W driving bulbs in it runs the charging system right at it's limit.  Some times on extended rides it will actually run the battery down to the point that the bike will not start.
I have been trying to find some 30W H3 bulbs but have had no luck so I am going to change them out for a couple of 12W LED's.  The LED's I found are extremely cheap, about the same cost as 2 H3 bulbs.

I like the Twisty 750 idea, but I can hear the complaining now.

" THAT'S not a twisty, there were straight stretches in there ! "

So I guess the challenge would be to quantify it. Could no more than 10% of the ride be on slab ? Can none of it be on slab ?
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

Good luck and enjoy! When you're ready for a "twisty 1000," give the Colorado Classic 1000 a shot (shameless plug). We keep freeways to a minimum!

good luck with your adventure. I'd need some good selection of tunes to do that ride. It would be the only thing to keep me from dying of boredom. A steep price to pay for a license plate frame if you ask me....and I know you didn't.

+1 on good luck to atavar on the adventure.

The CO Classic (twisty 1000) sounds cool. If I got out there, I'd probably want to do it in a few days to soak in the sights.

Twisty 750 - yeah, can you imagine the detailed definitions and contentious conversations something like that would generate?

"Oops - looks like you did 10.2% slab so you don't qualify."
"But my twisties were 30MPH-twisties, not 90MPH-sweeping curves like yours."

My oldest boy just did the IBA for 1061 miles. With his wife on the back. The bike was his 850 lb Yamaha Royal Star Touring Deluxe. She won't ride with him on his Beemer. I have never personally done more than 660 miles in a day, and doubt I ever will.

the ride went great!  This is a super route for a first time IBA rider.  Easy, safe, not a lot of map work.  We had plenty of time for breaks and food.
You will all be happy to know that none of the rabid killer deer attacked us.  We saw a couple but they were the mild-mannered passive variety that behaved as expected.

yup, private, no pics.

An Iron Butt ride here would take you through two, three, four different counties, depending on route.

And you could do most of it at speeds well, well over 100mph!

If you remember, I was doing 200kph (125mph) on my EV not too long ago!

You might find that when the IBA checks your receipts you will get a nice note saying you were going a bit too fast and decline your application.  :)

But, on the interstates out here you can go at a good clip to make the mileage easily in less than 20hrs.  Abq, Flagstaff, Tucson, Las Cruces and back is a bit over 1000mi.

Well, goodonya for completing the run!  Let's hope Kneebone (says it's his real name) certifies your effort!   :thumb:

Is that right...they dictate what your averages can be, is that so they don't sanction speeding?

The IBA sponsors these runs to promote safe long distance riding.  They are not rallies or races and there is no 'best time' to beat, and for most of them you only need to average 43mph to finish the miles in the allotted time.  It's a self-challenge thing with some objective recognition for the achievement.  With that in mind, you bet!  If they run the numbers on your time stamps (you get time stamped at every stop) and decide you were riding too fast they'll decline your application.

These runs are not to be confused with the IBA RALLIES which are f-ing nutz in the "cannonball run" tradition.  I'd say MOST IBA certificate holders have never done a rally.

The big IBA rally is not really a canonball run.  It is also closely controlled, especially with SPOT tracks on everyone where speeds can be observed at any time.  It is more a test of endurance with fatigue playing a major factor in an 11day event.

Local rallies are probably not as well monitored, but, if IBA sanctioned they will do things like revoke a certificate if you were caught speeding (or someone notices you bragging about speeding).

No, perhaps not a literal cannonball run.  But I've heard of folks outfitting with pee bags, ginormous fuel capacities, specially built bikes and 'personal endurance enhancement substances' for the events.  It's quite a bit different than the individual SS1000-type challenges and not my personal cuppa.

On that I tend to agree.  They are the type who stop for gas only because it is in the rules.  Many, many hours in the saddle with few stops.

They started and ended here Albuquerque this year.  Specially built usually meant several GPS units, two sets of driving/fog lights and an aux fuel tank.  Many had a half gallon jug of water strapped to the side as well.  I was surprised how many of the bikes were stock.  A few had Rotopaks instead of an aux fuel tank.  Then there was the guy on a Kawa 250.  I think his bike was stock and he had a camelback for water.  And the lady on a Beemer scooter (her husband was on a GS I think) which also looked stock.

Quite a group.

Boy, I hope we don't get pinged for speeding..  most of this ride was on SD highways with an 80mph posted limit.  That left us enough time for breakfast at the end of the SS1K

I wonder what the margin for "tolerance" is on these IBA runs.  A few weekends ago, Tom Nova here started musing aloud about doing one - I have to admit, I'd never thought of a 1000 miler on a moto bike before, although I have logged a few 650 to 700's and that's enough for me frankly.  I guess if one were to start out mentally prepared to do a 1000 miles or a 1500, it's more possible, and probably a lot more fun to do it with a buddy rather than solo.  Hhhmm...perhaps sometime to aspire to when I retire years in the future!

Meaning...how much excess speed over some threshold that the IBA association consider speeding, in other words, is it ok to do 85, 90, but not much more than 90 mph between gas fill ups or do they really hold you to an average of say 75 mph max?  thanks!
