Stelvio First Oil Change question

I just bought a 2013 Stelvio and at 560 miles I am doing the first oil and filter.

I cannot find a filter wrench that will fit.  The one I have does fit the oil filter I got from the dealer the day I bought the bike

Any help would be appreciated

First time I had to change the 2009 Stelvio oil and was faced with an unknown oil filter end configuration, I took my Centauro oil filter remover and used it.

This consists of a 1" x 1" piece of oak 12" long, with 2 appropriate (about 10-penny) nails driven through it about 1-1/2" apart.

I take and knock the nails up into the bottom of the filter and twist it out.   After that, my filter wrench fits the new filters ......

The unfortunate thing is that UFI make two different filters. One has eight flutes, one has fourteen. In Oz we still get the eight flute filters. I believe in the US fourteen flutes are the norm. Whether the factory installs different filters for different markets or if the bikes are all delivered with eight flute filters that get changed to fourteens at first service I really don't know but count the number of flutes and but a suitable cap wrench.

The problem with the Stelvio is the oil filter is up in the oil pan and I can't get to it from the side, only the bottom.  I already have 5 of the plastic cup wrenches. The oil is already out of the bike so I can't ride it to a parts store to "try" out a few different ones.  I guess I will just have to try and find one a little smaller than the one that fits the replacement OEM filter

How many flutes? If eight you need a 76AF cap wrench. What's this 'Plastic' shit? You can't turn a steel filter body with a plastic cap wrench with that sort of clearance!

My local auto parts store has nearly a dozen cap wrenches on the shelf, none of which fit the UFI 14-flute filter.  I bought a Bosch filter that will accommodate the cap wrench I have left over from my oilhead BMW days.

Sometimes big channel locks can grab the bottom of the filter and crush it a bit so you can turn it out.
I would buy a few extra filters and keep them on the shelf for future oil changes.

I drilled two holes 180 degrees apart in the end of my 14 flute filter cup wrench about 1-1/4" to 1-1/2".  Then put sheet metal screws through them into the bottom of the filter.  Note, have a catch pan under the filter.  The filter came right out without too much of a mess. 

Similar to what Lannis did with the stick and nails.  Since I had Hondas in the garage watching, I had to be a bit more elegant in my approach as their feelings are a bit more sensitive to brute force.

It is an RCH to big for the oem filter.  I was able to finally get it off with what I had.  I think I will go with the Bosch 3300 filter in the future

The Germans make a universal filter removal wrench by Hazet (#2172-1) that uses 3 fingers with a central gear that closes the fingers to grab the filter housing as you unscrew the device with a 17mm socket.  I've used it on everything from Subaru to Cummins diesel to VW.  As long as there is 3/8" clearance all around.  Jurgen

 :1: The Bosch 3330 is a recommended replacement on the Stelvio.  It's readily available, known for good filtration, and easy to find a wrench that will fit.

Not all UFI filters are the same size, even if they have the same number of flutes.

You can go the route of nails, belts, vise grips and all that or get the one tool that eliminates once and for all, any chance you won't get the filter off. It is called the Bogart Talon filter removal tool. There is a thread about it and explains how to remove the filter that might be stuck or has a size no filter wrench happens to fit properly.

Instead of buying a bunch of filter wrenches, buggering it up and making what should take a few minutes just a lit of frustration, get the right tool.

Get the two common sized filter wrenches that should cover most filters you might use on the Stelvio and add the Bogart tool. Then you don't ever have to mess around again.

I have no less than three UFI filters, all the same part number and all are slightly different sizes.

No, you do not need to drop the oil pan. You can take the Bogart tool with you, it is small so that you never get stuck some place needing to remove the filet and start sticking screw drivers through the filter.

Basically you drill a hole in the center of the filter bottom, let the oil drain out. Then remover the bottom (top depending on how you see it) with a 2.5" hole saw bit like the one used when installing door locks.

The filter element comes straight out, the Talon goes in and you remover the filter housing. There is no way to damage anything and the entire process takes a couple of minutes.

The Hazet 2172-1 is not going to work on the Stelvio if it has the same oil pan and clearance as the Norge, 2011 year on up. What will happen is that it will slip and bugger up the pan or spin on the filter. There are many of those types sold and while they work on cars and so forth, take a close look at the oil filter and pan for the model Stelvio the OP is referring to.

BTW, the Bogart is made in the USA, right in Washington.

Call them and tell them its a Moto Guzzi and you'll get the right one.

It is also reconfigurable to fit any other filter by swapping out the hardened bolt. I ordered and got it the next day.

Had the same dilemma with a Nappa filter that was suppose to match the uf1 exactly, it didn't . A couple of wraps of emery cloth inside of the cap wrench I had did the trick. Friction can be a great tool.

I had some thick rubber tape I put inside the wrench, I was able to push that onto the filter and remove it, yes friction can be a good thing, sometimes
