If you want yet another way to read engine temps.

Yes, another thread about reading engine temps. The value of the method and means here is questionable and the value even more so but some people just want to know.

There are the typical cylinder head temp readers, the handheld laser or IR type and the drill a hole insert sensor type. While they each provide some information, the general consensus has been it is useless info. Nevertheless, there is yet another way to go about getting engine temps, from various locations on the engine. The remote IR sensor that hooks up to your smartphone. I happen to see one made by Ryobi and it is the size of a matchbox and has a 1/4 -20 female threaded insert so you can mount it just about anywhere.

The whole affair plugs into your smartphone via a earpiece wire and sends the data to the phone for display. It has a sensor range of between -22F to 662F, more than sufficient for most uses I imagine.

Here is a link to the item.

I picked one up out of curiosity and because why not buy yet another device that will do something I don't need?

I'm going to mount this gizmo on various mounting points and see how well it actually works. Since it dies have an alarm to signal preferred temps maybe someone will find value in it.

This does require that you download an app for your phone, either Android or Apple since it uses the phone's display to show the temp and a graphic representation of the same.

Its about $39 so that makes it less expensive that the typical temp sensor and gauge and since it can be moved around, it might come in handy to see how various parts of the engine heat up and atbwhat temps they run.

I haven't yet opened it up to try it but will do that tomorrow and I'll report back in case anyone is interested.
