BMW stumbled over a rampant global sales success when they released the R nineT. The world went nuts for the air-cooled retro roadster, leaving the factory struggling to keep pace with demand, and as hungry owners twiddled their thumbs for delivery, bikes were changing hands in the order queue at a £1000 premium over the retail price.

For what's worth, in Italy the R nineT is already an ex-success. It had been the 9th best sold bike in 2014, but is only 26th in 2015 so far, and only 35th in the monthly sales of september (that means being behind the R1200GS/Adventure, R1200R, R1200RS and R1200RT).

Rumors are that BMW will end the production with the introduction of the Euro IV.

But doesn't Euro IV start by next year (or end of next year)? It would seem a short run then.

My understanding is that air-cooled engines can be emissions-compliant. However, getting the high horsepower numbers from them in the process is more of a challenge.


On an important note, I have not heard a lot of feedback on mechanical problems, especially final drive failures, with the large BMW models produced in the last 2-3 years.

Other problems persist. Various new models of BMW have experienced electrical switch issues and other things primarily related to the whiz-bang do-dads they laden on the bikes to appeal to their aging customer base.

I still have more than one BMW but not anything lately produced. If their reliability record improves, I would consider a new one some day.

Boy do I like the idea of being able to correct one of my most sincere non-buyer's-remorse opportunities of the past.

That of missing out on an R80GS, new and warranted from the factory!

If these play out as predicted - are offered with limited mandatory electro-farkles for the soccer-mom-esque riders out there and are old school BMW reliable - I'm likely on board.

Steel tank, air cooled... Hmm... I wonder how hard it'd be to convert to carbs?...
