First ride this Fall
« on: October 14, 2015, 06:52:45 PM »
I've been busy with life, but this afternoon was free so I took a ride to nowhere in particular.

Two grand dowager queens: one on footers, the other on wheels.  Both beauties who don't look their age.

Travis, I have blown by that turn-off on SR 259 countless times, and have yet to see the place.  You have inspired me to go take a look.

Gotta love the directions about "GPS won't get you there."  http://www.caponsprings.net/location-directions/

Bill, you should definitely stop by Capon Springs hotel. It is definitely a throw-back atmosphere. I stopped and talked with two ladies whose families have been vacationing there for 4 generations.

Be aware that the road turns to dirt (graded forest road, similar to Green Ridge) just past the hotel and on out to WV55.

We were on the west end of WV... Found a little color here and there.  Made our way down to Roan Mountain on the NC/TN border as well.

Could have been one of mine.   We're a 4-generation Capon Springs family.  My grandparents started going to Capon Springs in the 1940s.    I've been going every year, without fail, since 1968.

My sons have been every year since they've been born in 1985 and '86.    Now my grandchildren are going ... Our family all gets together there for a week the last week of October each year, about 18 of us - cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren.

Wouldn't miss it!   Lots of people wouldn't like it - no cell coverage, no WiFi, no telephones or TVs in the rooms, family-style dining but it's nice.

Going up Sunday and will be there all week .....
