put a sidecar on a 2014 Cali touring?
« on: October 18, 2015, 04:31:40 PM »
Has anyone does this or does anyone have an opinion on this? I've done a lot of long hauls on my Ural but I'm looking to upgrade to something that I can be a little more sure of a few hundred miles from home. Will it accept mounts and will the steering need any major mods?

Try these guys.  They make a lot of Guzzi sidecar stuff.

I always thought their Stelvio rig with an enduro sidecar might be cool.

... instead of Stelvio... would a Quota make a good tug?
I buy one frigging book and I'm bitten by big-blockitis.
I'm too old to be picking up a capsized Stelio so a third balance point has appeal.
Would a Quota and carriage cost about the same as a Stelvio in good condition?
... and can I sleep in your shed if my wife gets wind of this?
One may write one's destiny but the unknown delivers it.

I do know the owners manual says it is not designed to have a side car and would void the warranty. But I imagine all most all manuals today have the same disclaimer. Our in house council should be along soon.

Claude Stanley in Penn. is who I will use when the time comes.

Go to Hacks forum on ADVRiders a lot of info on the reputation of the two builders mentioned.

I have a sidecar on a Quota. It handles it well. Stelvio would do just as well if not better.

No idea on the newer 1400. I have not seen a sidecar on one yet. Modified steering is usually a nice to have and not always a necessity.

Nice looking rig! I didn't know it would void the warranty. I'll have to look into that a little. I ran across some sidecars that I think would really compliment the 1400. I've had the Norge for a while and I thought it might be time to try something new. But I want to leave the option open for a sidecar and buying another sport tourer won't do that.

I think that's got to be the most beautifully abused Sport that I've ever seen. I wonder if he found a way to have a commensurately large rear tire too.

My dealer put a picture of a Cali 1400 with side car on faecesbook.
If I recall, it was made by a specialist in Holland.
I'll post it, should I find it back.

Edit: found it

Talk to Jay at DMC sidecars, I'm sure they can do it the question is how much will it cost?

Buy the new Cali, sidecar, triple tree, other goodies try 30 LARGE.

Also expect to take a real beating in resale.

Another vote for the Stevio rig. I'm very happy with mine.  Don't minimize the need for a big gas tank.  I really wish I had the new Stelvio  with the big tank.  30 mpg doesn't get you very far

I remember being at the Iowa National in 2006 where I saw a Centauro as a tug. My beast only got me 30MPG without a hack. I could not imagine 60-75 miles between fuel stops.

cost is an issue, to be sure. Used is hard to find. Most used sidecar rigs are either Urals, and I already have one of those, or Harley Davidson. I don't have any real objections to that but it would be something entirely new for me.

Quota makes a fine tug.  I installed a 3 gallon RotoPax [?] on the sidecar for extra fuel range.

Thanks really quite nice. I had kind of put the idea behind me until I saw these pictures. I really like the ev from the 06 nationals. I saw it there too. The big issue is that a Cozy gives you as little as 16" hip room. Even for my charming and svelte wife, that's a bit snug for the long haul. And the California would really need to have a heavier car. Frankly, I don't know what to do. I need another sidecar in my future. A 2014 California can be had now for a pretty reasonable price but I can't do it unless I trade in my Norge. Then I have a cruiser until I can come up with the money to buy the car. I'm old enough that, by the time my long range plan comes to fruition, I might be dead.
