CENTER STAND FAILURE ON MY STELVIO NTX
« on: October 22, 2015, 02:10:55 PM »
So, while deploying the center stand, the bike listed and fell toward the right bending the stand's right mounting flange.  Good thing there was a lawn mower, a DR350, a few boxes and a plastic bucket [except for the melted plastic on the header] or I doubt I'd be able to get it back up in my mess of a garage.  (It was the left bolt and nut that disappeared somewhere on the road.)

On first glance it seems the other nut securing the center stand bolt appears to be welded to the frame (I think it should be) but perhaps not.  This is the first time I've experienced a center stand failure.  Suppose this is an "inspection item" I should have made.  But there was no loose feeling at any time prior to the event.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?  Or again, is it just me?

Was warned of this on my Norge by someone here. Loctite is good for this.

Best,
Peter

to be clear, this was not a failure of the center stand; this was a case of a bolt falling off due to vibrations and perhaps never being tightened in the first place.

Yes; it's the sort of thing that happens pretty frequently if you don't catch the loose fasteners in time.  My KTM stand would loosen its bolts no matter how hard I torque them down.

The Breva 1100 was known for this  when new, I checked mine and put some loctite on the fasteners.

I rolled in to the Virginia national rally a few years ago with a bungee cord holding up one side of the centerstand on my Breva 1100. Apparantly I wasn't the only loose nut on my bike that day.

Sort of the same thing w/ my 1200 Sport (and my buddy and I were the ones who installed the center stand, back in 2010.)  As I recall, the loose left side bolt contacted another part of the bike, telling me there was an issue.  Lucky for me, there was no topple over.  We should most likely have used some sort of thread lock when installing the center stand, though it didn't come loose for several years and several thousand miles ..... I mean, a bunch of miles!

Laughed at and called anal because I check everything before riding and all external easy to touch stuff when refueling.

Gotta check anything you can easily touch, including the swingarm, cables/hoses, tire pressures, levers and foot rests. Takes about 60 seconds. Could save a lot more than that.
