My DD214 was typed on onion skin. I can still remember the mimeograph purple ink smell from high school. Mom learned shorthand in high school and was hired as a secretary and several years later became the warehouse manager for John Deere in Columbia. (Next door to The Confederate Mint. No, it was not still in operation)

I hadn't heard the expression "onion skin" before. I do miss airmail paper and envelopes.
Still use a metal flip-up telephone list occasionally, I believe it's been following me since I got my first "real" job in 1978. Somehow it has survived all sorts of electronic devices and personal computer directories.......

Rolodexes outlived slide rules by 30 or 40 years, lots of people still use them.   

Not so the slide rule.   About 1973, you could buy a four-function and square-root calculator for $99.95 or so, and shortly after that, the slide rules all started disappearing quick .... !

One of the cause and effects of the anti smoking crowd is the lack of proper cigarette disposal ashtrays.  The effect has been an increase number of cigarettes disposed of as litter on the ground.  There were three fires recently close to home from cigarettes being tossed into shrubs outside of business.  An ashtray would have saved the insurance company a lot of money

Seeing the vending/coin operated machines are real signs of past methods receiving services.  One thing I have never seen is real life is the coin operated meters used in homes and business to pay for gas, water and electricity.  These machines must have been collected and scrapped extensively.  Kindly like the payphone industry.  I had opportunities to own and operate payphones, but saw the writing on the wall. 

I have owned and operated vending routes.  Having a route that serviced these utility services would have been interesting.

I'm thinking cigarette machines may have been the first vending machines ever.



They were in bars, airports, hotel lobbies, everywhere.  I don't remember seeing any other sort unless you count gambling machines.

When I started working at a Virginia state park in 1970, we still had cigarette vending machines, outdoors under an awning, available 24/7 to anyone (kids included).    Price was $.17 a pack - dime, nickel, and two pennies.   No tax on cigarettes in Virginia then ...
