I Survived, somehow
« on: November 04, 2015, 06:05:28 PM »
Took my Wee Goose (2004 Breva 750 w 41,150 miles) on a fall ride of 180 miles.

Along the way a cager started to turn left right in front of me. The driver stopped his stupid act at the last fraction of a second ...saving my geezerly arse.  5 minutes later 3 deer ran across the road in front of me. The 4th changed his mind in mid- road or he would have taken me out. 10 minutes after that another cager pulled in front of the cage in front of me with only feet to spare. If they'd hit I would have surely been involved.

Glad to have survived to write this.

I'm very glad you're safe.  It is said, however, that having close calls is a sign that you may not be riding defensively enough.

Dan, glad you made it through the gauntlet!  We never did manage to get together for another ride this fall.  Seems like Seth was busy with his van and other projects, and I got busy and bought another bike.  Now the weather is finally turning.  Hope you had a good ride otherwise!

If a cat has 9 lives, how many lives does a motorcycle rider have?  Glad you did not have to use up one of yours.  That is one crazy day you had.

time for a bike with ABS?

Out with Fay today on the Stelvio on a two-lane road, coming up to a hill crest with the road curving left.

Over the hill comes a Ford F450 dually pulling an equipment trailer, already straddling the double yellow and still coming my way.

Having enough brake or having ABS wasn't the issue; it was WAY too late for him to stop no matter what I did.   I braked and was looking for a place to go (nothing but ditch, trees, and barbed wire on my side) when he finally looked up from his texting and jerked the truck back into his lane.   I was afraid that some of the junk on the trailer was going to come off and get me as the trailer looked like it swayed up on one wheel, but it all stayed there.

I guess I just don't realize how important these people's time is.   It's certainly more important that the lives of a couple people on a bike.

Try riding a bicycle when a driver passes on a blind curve or hill, and when a car appears coming the other way, he just comes over into you, with the attitude of "Do you expect me to hit a big, hard, oncoming car, or a small, soft bicycle rider?"

I wish I believed in the law of averages - I could say that you were good to go for a few years.  Unfortunately I think what happened to you is a result of too many deer and too many bad drivers conditions that's aren't going away.

Very glad you got to tell the tale.

I live in an area that is unbelievably congested. The drivers are also well known for their, shall we say, less than considerate attitude (aka Massholes). I never, EVER, think that i have the right of way- even if I do. If I decide to pass through an intersection and another car is stopped prepped for a left- I try to consider my "escape" lane. I don't mean to get down on the OP- but the whole "car chess" thing about thinking 4 moves ahead is part of the game.

Geez,

Its ok to share and get the stress out of your system.  Seems we all go thru phases-periods when "shit happens" and close calls come in clusters.  Definitely rethink time of day/situation and even riding some of the offender roads.  Given that, just stay focused and always anticipate and consider options to collisions.

I am geared up for a ride this morning before the weekend rains.  Likely I will see several groups headed for the Galveston Rally.

We too, in the Houston area, have an abundance of terrible drivers and blind intersections.

I'm farther west in our beautiful state, where the drivers are not quite as homicidal, but I know they're all still trying to kill me when I'm on my motorcycle or on my bicycle.

I've had rides sort of like that, glad you made it home.

Then there are rides where things just don't feel right and my heads not in the game.  Reflexes are slow, bike feels odd, cats bark and dogs meow.

Tis better to retreat to the couch and NFL than to push one's luck.

There's always tomorrow.... I hope.

Sounds like my daily commute! Glad you are okay!

Yes, try riding a bicycle along the right shoulder of the road, being passed at 50 mph by idiot cagers inches from your left shoulder. It is a war zone out there.

This morning, on my way to work, an idiot cager racing behind me in a pickup truck nearly rear-ended me when I stopped for the idiot cager in front of me who decided to turn left in front of on-coming traffic at the last second without signaling. Gah!

Still, I plan to buy another motorcycle soon to replace my rear-ended and totaled Norge. I am not giving up riding bicycles, scooters, or motorcycles. I am just going to make sure I say my prayers and have my health and life insurance paid up...

I was going to say something very similar to that. (except the bit about the NFL)

Was driving the red Mazda 3 cage, with grandpa running errands yesterday here in Sugar Land.  Young man pulled behind us as I was doing an under freeway 59 legal-U turn to get to other side.  Heavy traffic, hard to see and multiple lanes turning:  young man laid on horn and got really nasty.  Grandpa flipped him off (lmfao) and then the young man went into road road game with me.  He rapidly pulled in front, then slowed, so I shifted lanes, and finally the jerk flew ahead and onto freeway.  Man I love this stuff:  the lethal toxic drivers in Houston.  Glad I was not on a bike.  Grandpa Larry had it right though.... :boozing:
