NGC - Video of Western MD Scenic Railroad 734
« on: November 05, 2015, 04:12:45 PM »
Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's 734 (Mountain Thunder) is due for her FRA 1,472 day inspection at the end of the 2015 season. With C&O 1309 taking over in 2016, 734 may be out of service for some time. Some great footage in this video, I especially like when he's pacing the train on the bike path!

As a kid, I remember standing next to one that was leaving the station. The size and power was frighteningly awesome!

Thanks Charlie! Great stuff there. Steam locomotives are live, breathing things. A few years ago UP 844, the only steam locomotive to never go out of service, came though town. Wow! Best whistle ever, and plenty of power to be at maximum track speed without breaking into a sweat. I captured it on black and white film because that was appropriate.

Terrific video! I took that train last fall but behind the diesel. Life long train nut, model and vintage. Not so much into modern trains. Thanks for posting.

Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, WV has Shays, a Heisler and soon a Climax: http://www.cassrailroad.com/locos.html

I have a Heisler as well, but it's HO scale, made in Italy by Rivarossi.

As a kid myself and a few friends would trek just out of our neighborhood to the 'tunnel' where we would smoke and wait for an L&N coal train to come through, entering the yard section of Hazard, KY. We loved to go inside the tunnel when they came through because the RS3 diesels would be pulling loads up a grade and the sounds-music, the smells-intocicating, the rush of the wind has never left me. In contrast to the excitement of a train noisily approaching and then the cars squeeking and slowly quietly moving on, following was a monastic silence. A few insects, birds, were the only sounds, total relaxation. No one around. The creosote, better than any incense and the steel rails glistening in the sun.

If this were a perfect world there would only be twisty two lanes, big valve over head cam V-twin motorcycles the only machines allowed. And railroads.

Maybe a few biplanes.

Thanks for posting a wonderful video.
