New Project for the winter
« on: November 09, 2015, 01:51:56 PM »
I have a new project for the winter, it is a 1974 750S, imported from Germany into Canada back in the 90's. The bike came with a book of receipts from TLM that included Giladorni kits, a new crank, main bearings, shells, forks, rims, spokes, and a whole lot of other stuff. I am thinking the bike was rebuilt after a wreck given how much is non stock about it.

It has a matching serial number to engine stamp, correct tool boxes, gas tank and foot rests but a lot of parts are not stock.

I have made a list of things that I will change to return it to stock, can you list what is incorrect? I will post what I found and compare it my felloe train spotters out there in WildGuzzi land

Yikes - I thought mine was a mess.  That red frame has gotta go .  And what on earth happened to the right side exhaust clamp?

Still, we know that by the time you're done, it will be magnificent.  Happy wrenching.

Interesting bodge on the exhaust clamp isn't it! A new head will be going on its place.

My list of what is incorrect on the bike (so far)

Chrome rims, need to replace them with the correct aluminum Borrani's
Break calipers, should have two bleeders per casting, these are much newer and will be replaced
Headlight bucket, this looks to off a 850T or similar, V& Sport type CEV to be installed and cast brackets are upside down
Signal lights, should be Aprilia cast units with front and rear chrome brackets as per V7 Sport
Handle Bars, early V7 Sport type fitted, should be the later type with the folded steel clamps
Instruments, 850T gauges fitted, should be V7 Sport type
Instrument idiot light bezel, cool custom signal indicator lights fitted, should be stock 4 bulb as per V7 Sport with the low brow valance
Switches, off some Japanese bike, original snuff box CEV would be correct
Tail light, light and bracket are not correct, should be standard CEV bracket and tail light
Horns, should be a pair of chrome voxbells
Rear drive, off a 850T3 or similar, should be as per Eldorado / V7 Sport
Shocks, they are Konis but should be earlier type like V7 Sport
Rear lift handles, missing
Hand grips, should be the hard miserable V7 Sport type
Fuse box, should be gray CEV with clear plastic cover
Wire Harness, home made, well done but not correct
High tension spark plug leads, missing retaining clips and O ring on each side
Mufflers, should be matte black Silentium without flared ends
Brake lever, should have rubber end not a knurled steel foot pedal
Foot Rest supports, should be semi gloss black, not chrome
Stripe patter on gas tank is incorrect
Decals missing on tool boxes
Header 'P' brackets missing Rubber caps missing from swing arm cap nuts
Electronic fuel valve missing
Small starter motor without solenoid would be correct
Rotor cover should not have a plastic spacer
Rubber boot missing from ignition switch
Rubber air box and screen missing
Breather box hoses are incorrect
Courtesy light under seat missing
Centre stand has had the foot lugs replaced with steel rod welded on

And the ugly red paint on the frame and stands has to go back to satin black!

That and all the rusted bolts, perished rubbers, rotten brake hoses and frayed cables, the crimp connectors on the wire sub harness items, and the white zip ties, are the obvious bits that I have noted so far.

What surprises lurk inside the engine, transmission and rear drive remain to be seen.

The rest is straight forward, take it all apart, clean, inspect, measure, replace, re-plate, repaint, and reassemble.

Joy

Don't forget to find some of those black plastic knobs that tighten your flip-up rear fender/mudguard, eh?
Looks like a great project.. this is gonna be a beauty.  No bike cd ask for a more qualified caretaker/restorer, that's for sure...

I like the red frame. <shrug> I'd clean it up and correct any functional issues, leave most of the "incorrect" stuff alone and then ride the wheels off of it.  :bike-037:

Nice project Charlie.

You know I can't leave the 750S scruffy, these are so rare especially in North America that I feel I must return it to as close to stock as possible so that future owners and generations can be confident that they have a 'correct' example in their custody.

It's only 'mine' for a while.

I like the red frame too...that's a cool bike as it is!  ...and since it needs so much work, I would be willing to take it off your hands cheap...LOL
