California pipe burn
« on: November 14, 2015, 12:04:25 PM »
I've got an 02 California and within the past 150 miles or so I added an h pipe to the exhaust. This is the only mod to the intake or exhaust that I have made. After the last ride I noticed a black burnt spot the size of a quarter on the right side header, on the outside of the bend where it turns to go under the floorboard.  I don't know when this started as I park it with the front wheel facing a wall. I assume it started with the addition of the h pipe. The bike was running fine, no lean popping on decal, or other issues. Pulled the right hand spark plug and it looked ok, definitely not lean and probably a tad black.  The bike has 37000 miles on it and it probably needs the injectors synched.  Any other suggestions on why the h pipe would do this?

Tom , did this bike not have a crossover pipe before ? Are you sure this isn't something burned on to the pipe?

It had the original fat muffled crossover on it. And it is a black burn mark with the edges turning a little golden.  Kind of like a weld burn without the splatter.

Hmm , amazing how much difference a change in crossover pipes can make . The golden color is normal for stainless , kind of sounds like unburned fuel igniting in the header pipe is causing excess heat .

Like you said the injectors are not synched.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉 Hawaii.

I guess I'll park it until I can either understand the Guzziology procedure or haul it up  to Harper's.  Should have my CL 350 back up and going this week end. At least I know how to curse in carburetorese

Sure it's a different reason,
Had a similar black spot near the tail of one of my pipes.
Appeared after a trip to visit mother.
She'd convinced me I needed to take some orange juice for the journey which once on the way I promptly forgot about.
Realise later some had leaked out of my panniers!
Took ages to Polish out.
