Jonah Lomu RIP
« on: November 18, 2015, 01:12:53 AM »
His death wont mean much to many of the people on this site but does to the New Zealanders and to many Englishmen like me too.

I still remember watching the RWC in 1995 and watching Jonah Lomu knock Mike Catt flat on his back and then run over the top of him to score

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPMZrPjW5cs

And the sound track the BBC played over the highlights at the end of the match was ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X9VEcQEo0I

An awesome play and a sad loss

A truely great player, unfortunately he played for the All Blacks.
Always entertaining to watch even though it was usually through the fingers of your hands over your face.
40 is really young, and with a young family tragic, he deserved better, but he has had major kidney issues for many years, he has been on borrowed time since 2011 when his body rejected the kidney transplant he had in 2002.
My best wishes to his family and friends to NZ and Rugby.
A sad day.

Too true

I found my self torn between admiration for his ability and the fact the with the ball in his hands England were probably about to go down by 5 points

It was and is huge news here of course. He had a short but spectacular career.

As a side note, under all the noise about Jonah, our All Blacks captain and the only man to lift the Rugby World Cup twice, Ritchie McCaw, quietly resigned from rugby to take up a flying career.

A magnificent rugby player, one of the best ever. Despite his fame, he was always a gentleman. He'll be remembered by the Welsh (and Scottish, Irish) for embarrassing the English stars. Even after his kidney transplant he played his last season with Cardiff. The game is one star dimmer today.
