Honda S65 I bought used for (I think) $70.00 in 72 or 73. It did a lot of miles at WOT and 55-60MPH depending on wind.

I started out really big, 35cc Winged Wheel

I learned a lot with that, it was quite fast for such a small engine, 30 mph on the flat, the second bike I ought was a 600cc Ariel with a one piece head and barrels. The side valves were extracted thru a pair of brass plugs followed by another Ariel 600 model VB

67 Yamaha 305 two stroke. I loved that thing because I didn't know any better, but I could get it up around 95. At least it was fun and reliable.

Hmmm... Fun and reliable, and enough power to go 95.  Is there any reason not to love a bike like that?

I can understand that, DFM.  I hope you still have it.  The Ninja 250 is a heck of a nice motorcycle for beginners or old timers alike.  I bought a 10 year old one this year, so my daughter would have something to learn on and I love it myself.
