'99 Bassa - Two leads from tank - One to fuel pump, one to fuel sensor ?

All appears to be okay re charging system and battery.

The battery went dead overnight a couple of days after the low fuel sensor came on and stayed on...with a full tank.

I charged the battery and checked for parasitic draw with the key off, and there was none.

I unplugged one tank connection and the fuel pump made unhappy sounds. I re-plugged it and unplugged the other.

The fuel light stays off. The fuel pump sounds happy. Battery reading at off, key on, idling, and cruising revs all look good.

So I'm going with the shorted fuel light theory. I may ride it to work tomorrow...

You were lucky that the fuel tank was full. If not, you'd have burned up that really expensive sensor. Pay attention!  There is a red band on the matching pair.

The first lead pair you describe is for the electric petcock.  When you disconnected it, the petcock would not open and fuel would not flow.  The fuel pump was trying to suck fuel without any luck and responded with excessive noise.  The second lead pair is for the fuel level sensor.  You could run with or without that sensor working.  You'd just have to rely on your trip-meter to predict fuel stops.

Thanks guys. I've been careful to keep the red striped pairs matched, and I've been relying on the trip meter...no faith in low fuel indicator light on a bike that holds under five gallons.

The low fuel indicator came on for the first time in two years AFTER I filled up the tank. I'm hoping this will solve it, but time will tell.

If you measure the ohms of the fuel sensor and it's somewhere between 1000 and 2000 Ohms it's probably ok
Check the fuel light in the dash by shorting between the two connections at the loom, one is from the lamp, the other is a ground.
Carry a can of fuel and let the tank run down to empty, the light should come on dimly at first going off as the fuel sloshes around in the tank
then it will come on steady.

With the tank empty it takes about 1 minute for the light to come on, the sensor is slow to warm up at first.
