V7 sport electric fuel tap
« on: December 08, 2015, 03:01:46 AM »
Hi all, Im concerned about the electric fuel tap on my 72 V7 sport , it is functioning fine but was reading an article of Dave Richardson about where he suggested to replace with manual taps due to possible electric malfunction versus fuel , I try hard to keep my bikes original and would like to leave the tap insitu,  but has anyone had or heard of a malfunction causing a fire or should the solenoid part of the tap be replaced  with new after all these years in service.
I know all you guys with new bikes have electric pumps and sensors submerged in the tank but you also have top of the line wiring and pumps, not something 45 years old .
Any thoughts on my concern or should I leave it alone.  Many thanks Bill

No the electric petcocks are fine, do strap the wires to the body though so they don't flex and break off where they come out of the epoxy.
The brushes in your electric fuel pump are sparking away in fuel and they don't go boom.

If it still works, consider yourself lucky and leave it alone. The type of electro-valve used on the V7 Sport and Convert are highly unlikely to cause a fire.

If you're worried about the 45 year old wiring, Greg Bender makes excellent quality replacement wiring. http://www.thisoldtractor.com/for_sale_wiring_harness_tonti_v7_sport.html
