How long do a Griso tappet inspection take?
« on: December 19, 2015, 07:54:34 PM »
I curious what Griso owners have paid to have the tappets inspected or replaced.  I'm getting widely varying answers so far...
Thanks!

As I said via PM John I can do a full 'C' kit install, including dropping the sump for a clean out and looksee but not pulling the oil pump, in under eight hours. That involves removing the heads and disassembling the inlet valves to install the shims and rebuilding/refitting them. As long as the camboxes are assembled, (They should be and usually are.) installing them is a straight swap, the only parts you swap over are the rockers.

To just inspect the tappets? 2.5 hrs tops. I can get the left hand one off in about 25 minutes, you don't even have to pull the tank, just the 'Wing' on the left of a Griso!

2 X bolts holding the breather plate on. 1 X screw in back of barrel. Unload camchain tensioner, (Trickiest bit of whole operation!) 1 X bolt holding sprocket to camshaft. Loosen two screws at back of camchain tunnel. Remove four main nuts holding head/cambox on. Lift off cambox. Invert, (After draining oil from weir so it doesn't run all over yer trewsers!) examine tappet feet through weir. Then undo four bolts holding weir on and get a good look. Really, twenty five minutes and believe me I don't rush! I'm far too old and grumpy to rush!

RH side is easier still but requires removal of the tank so say 40 minutes max. Putting it all back together takes a little bit longer but not much. In my recent experience though they never can go back together.

Incidentally here are some pics of damage. I fear that some people working in shops may think that something like this, meaning the one with just a small amount of coating missing, is 'OK'.

it isn't. Any wear at all, even any discolouration of the surface of the DLC is an indicator that the damage has begun and after its started it won't stop

until it gets really ugly!

and by then its far, far too late.

Took me 1 1/2 hrs on ea. side and I'm slow.  But I've done a whole bunch from the very beginning in 09'
If they quote you more than 3hrs, go somewhere else cause they don't know what they are doing and haven't a clue.
Mine where all out, cams & tappets, wiped clean, w/pictures taken, then all reassembled.

Nope. Lets just say we're being *Generous* with our time figures.

I've got another one coming in tomorrow morning. I'll be pulling its camboxes on Tuesday. If you'd like I'll actually time myself. I won't be trying to beat the clock or anything stupid, just doing the job and photographing as I go so that people get an idea.

It took me 8 weeks to put in a C kit.
That included waiting and waiting on the parts.

I'll bet I spent 10 hours in the garage total, to pull the heads and all to install the full kit. Much of that was fabricating a valve spring compressor to reshim those valves.
Inspection only would be very easy, except for getting to the right hand valve spring cam chain tensioner plunger. Still, 2 or 3 hours should cover the inspection.

I'll go with done right any day of the week, don't matter how long it takes, if I trust a wrench like Pete I would tell him to call me when he was done, I would rather have done right then fast.

Slightly longer than it would take Piaggio to write a check.

John, Mark is coming over tomorrow and he's bringing his video camera so we'll do a quick vid of what is required for inspection if you like?

Are you on the Ghetto? If so PM Mr. Bob, he can give you the run-down on what's what with the swap as he stuck around and watched as I did his bike recently.

Well, video will be posted tonight when Mark gets home. I overestimated the time it takes considerably. Doing the LH side the video is 13 minutes long, and that includes disassembling the box to photograph the damage. Doing the RH side , which we didn't video required removal of the tank and disconnection of the injectors as the 'Quick Release' didn't. That added another ten minutes. All up the RH side took about 20 minutes from Go to Whoa!

Eight hour Shift? I think not.

Hope this works. I've just C&P the link from the Ghetto. If you can't see it here you can watch it there in this thread. As you know I'm not well versed in this sort of stuff.

Thanks Pete and Mark for the video.  I will be doing my roller conversion next week so watching this video helps make the job that much easier. :thumb:

With your 'A' kit Norge al you have to do from there is swap the rockers over rom the old camboxes to the new and ensure that the feed/locator dowels that go between the head and cambox on two of the studs are in place. They sometimes stay in the cambox, sometimes they come loose and stay on the studs but not located in their recesses in the head. They are important.

The. Just put the new cambox on and reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. Remember that you don't use the old earthing tang that goes on the upper rear stud under the nut. You use the little tang that goes under the two rocker plate retaining bolts in the centre of the cambox.

Torque big nuts to 30-32 ft/lbs. 6mm bolts by feel.

Loctite on sprocket retainer bolt and make sure that the holes in the flinger plate DON'T line up with the timing pin!

Valves set to 4 & 6 thou.

Clean out sump. New oil filter and oil.

TB balance and TPS/Trims re-set.

Go ride!

:1: Great video.  Thanks.  Just a small thing, but who is the manufacturer of the socket extension you used when you pulled the two bolts off the cambox cover?  It had a hex machined into the outside diameter where it connected to the ratchet.

Most of my sockets and ratchets, both 1/4 and 3/8 are Kingchrome.

That hexed extension is a nice tool. Got to look up Kingchrome.  Thanks.
