2nd bike suggestions
« on: December 24, 2015, 06:57:37 PM »
Having owned my Breva 1100 for almost a year I'm thinking of adding another bike to the mix. I thought about a cruiser or cafe but not sure. I'm even thinking about MV Augusta's or an Aprilia Tuono but think I might get a little crazy and start riding wheelies. The thought of it sure sounds like fun especially at my young 56 age. I only like Italian bikes or possibly a Triumph but never a boring Japanese as I've already done that. Looking at a budget of $3500 - $6000 on a used dependable and comfortable bike for 2-6 hr day trip rides in city (Houston) and (Hill)country roads. Also I want around 900cc or up. Looking to do this in a few months so have plenty of time to think it thru. Took 30 years to get my Breva and love it.

I'm not alone here in getting a CB1100. It really is a nice bike.

Second choice, the new Suzuki SV650. I'll stop there or I could really go on a run.

I'll play!

Previous bikes: a couple of Suzukis, a Ducati, and a couple of Triumphs (all new except the Ducati). Current main bike: Moto Guzzi Norge.

Alternate bikes: his and hers Vespa scooters (new, with ABS). For riding around town and out in the country (we live out in the country), my wife and I have tremendous fun on our Vespas.

Not much leg room with a budget of around $6k and Italian ( possibly British)...

If it were my money maybe an older 910 Brutale but at that range you might be buying somebody else's gremlins.. A V-Twin Tuono you can get for pretty cheap and can be a real hoot yet still be reliable. . A 2006-2009 Triumph Speed Triple would be a great bet as well..  Then again you can never go wrong with another Guzzi...

 Hmm , a Jackal for $2300.00 , $700.00 for some upgrades , leaves $3000.00 in the budget for a serious riding vacation . Just a thought .

You might find it useful to check out Royal Jordanian's channel on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/royaljordanian

He has nine bikes, ranging from classics to the latest, that he rides in London. While best known for his daily rides (as well as long rides in Europe and Enduro rides in North Africa), he does have impression videos on the bikes that he owns, which range from a Husqvarna Nuda to a Honda Grom. He does not do reviews, and does not do sponsored content.

To see more than his YouTube videos, go to "Show More" on his YouTube page and click on the Reel.TV link, which is his main site and includes a FAQ.

You say that you're 56. While he refuses to offer up any personal information, it's pretty clear that Royal Jordanian is in his 50s if not 60s.

Might give you some ideas about a new bike.

He is also quite entertaining, not to mention a very skilled rider.

Hmmmm- I might suggest something different from your Breva. I have a 1200S and love it. I just bought a 2014 leftover Aprilia Shiver. Fantastic engine. Very different from the guzzi (in a good way).  Although "only" a 750, it certainly feels like it has much more squirt than the 1200. However- it certainly wouldn't be ideal as a touring bike.  The suspension can be a pain to upgrade also. So far, I like the Aprilia engineering. Plenty of 1000cc Tuonos out there- but you won't find them ideal as tourers either.

I've been watching Brutale 750 and 910 prices for a while. They sure look like a lot of sexy Italian bike for the money. I'd like to find a way to add one of them to my garage.

I bought a used, '08 Shiver last year for about half of your max budget. The suspension could use some upgrades but it is a sporty bike with a comfortable riding position and good legroom. It moves along well but it's not in Tuono or Brutale territory, power wise.

Since my Breva 1100 is set up as more of a tourer, I've toyed with the idea of getting a 2nd Breva 1100 and swapping out handlebars for those from the 1200 Sport, knock a little weight off of it and upgrade the suspension for a comfortable sporty bike.

Not that hard to find V11s in your price range (but you may have to travel to get the one you want - or ship it to you). Start watching this thread over on V11LeMans:

http://www.v11lemans.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18375

There's been a flurry of Cafe Sports for sale recently - that's one of the more desirable in the V11 range. After the Scura, which, as everyone would agree, is the best motorcycle ever.

I see contradictions like MV Augusta and either that price range and/or "comfort" on 2-6 hour rides.

Also the 900cc and up thing is funny to me because it means very little when the range of power between one 900cc and another 900cc motor can be bigger than the difference between say from one 796cc motor (Duc Scrambler) and an 1100cc motor (say your B11).

But it sounds to me that you're thinking sportbike and not cruiser or classic, yes?

It's a narrow field if you're thinking only Italian or British (which is fine). My guess would be an Ducati, Aprilia or Triumph will be about the only thing to fit all your requirements, but don't automatically count out a sub-900cc motor.

If you're thinking Tuono, make sure that you first take one for a test ride.  I owned one for around six months and it's the only bike that I've ever owned (out of 45+) that scared the crap out of me.  Nothing wrong with the ergonomics, engine, etc; it's just that the bike has SO much power that I would come out of a turn a roll on the throttle........... .and the bike would try to stand up on the rear wheel.  I had never owned anything with that much torque & power and realized that I should NOT own that bike.  The guy that I sold it to was an adrenaline junkie and loved all that power.  I am NOT a novice rider but everyone has their limits; I found mine.

There are a lot of pre-owned Ducati Monsters out there in the $3,500-$6k range, 620, 750, 900, 695, 696.   At the top of that range, you can sometimes find the S2R (800 or 1000ccc).

Also, the early 90's 900SS is a great bike that is also often available in that price range.

I like the 900SS/CR, because it shows off the engine:

I've also seen several Ducati 748 and 749 in that price range.    Those make an excellent track-day bike.

I'm thinking sport bike but for some reason the Cali comes to mind. Definitly thinking Italian so maybe a Ducati. Lots of choices out there. I understand the cc thing so maybe I'm looking for more of a heavy weight. My son has a Shiver which I haven't rode yet but do like it.

This little one is capable of fine things. 800 gets the wet/slipper clutch.  If you're seeking longer days or more upright position, then the Multistroodle from this era can also be a nice find.

From what the OP has written, he wants a large displacement, sporty, reliable Italian bike that can be comfortable for a few days road trip for a reasonable price.  Ducati ST4s or ST3s have a more sport riding position, Multistrada more upright.  Sport 1100 is the ultimate Italian lust machine for those who can appreciate it.
