Modifying a Griso for Touring - what have you done to set it up?
« on: February 03, 2016, 08:50:29 AM »
Since I'm hosting a new Red/Black Griso for a while, I've been given the green light by its owner to use it and modify as I see fit to put some miles on it and break it in over  the next few months.

It comes with a very small windscreen, no fairing, a set of side bags and a soft rear bag...all else is stock.

For those who have a Griso, what sort of modifications have you made to screens/fairings/seat or other to set it up for all day riding?

If you can post pics of your mods that would be great...Thanks!

There was a Tenni Griso with the Givi 755 windscreen and Hepco/Becker bags that looked great for touring. It was owned by a Gentleman in Florida who sold it later.

Leafman might have pics of it from the 2012 Florida campout

I took many extended weekend trips on my 06 Speed Triple with a flyscreen and throw over soft bags
I don't think that any major mods are needed

I have seen pics of the Griso with a Givi "Tanklock" bag installed.  Pretty cool to be able to remove the tank bag so quickly and not worry about messing up the paint.  Looked good too.  I liked the idea so much I did the same thing to my Norge --

Dart Manta windscreen don't bother with the regular Dart, RKA bags, rear rack, 1" dropped footpegs.  but I did do the tail chop  For the rack get the more expensive Stucchi.  It goes on a heck of a lot easier than the $100 cheaper Moto Guzzi rack where you have to bore holes in the rear bodywork.

I do like the bags because the go on & off in minutes.  A strap around the back under the seat and two ties to the passenger peg mounts.

Here's a set of RKA 55's bags on a Lemans:

Now for my cold morning commutes I'm considering heated grips.

1" lower foot pegs made by Knight Design... http://www.knightdesignllc.com/Products/Motorcycle/Moto-Guzzi/Griso-1200/Moto-Guzzi-Griso-1200-Menu.html
CORRECTLY set up the suspension for the use you intend. The service manual has suggestions for this. I started with the 'racing' setup and tweaked it to my needs.

The compression damping on the fork is WAY too harsh out of the crate- plan on backing that out a few clicks
The rebound damping needs to be set front and rear
Sag front and rear for how you are going to load up the rig (loaded for touring vs solo vs two-up)
Drop the forks in the trees if you find the handling a little too 'wallow-y' or not as sharp as you would like.

I have a Griso large screen and the stock bags. They aren't huge but work for my several day long trips. I like how they snap on and off so I can store them in my motel room. They also come with probably worthless rain covers, trash bags would work better.
I also added a power cord to the battery for my heated vest and plugged a power cord into the aux plug for my GPS that lives in a RAM mount on the handlebars. Also have the stock luggage rack and use a tail bag on the seat. I also made a seat pad for longer days in the saddle, its a slab of foam in a nylon bag, but it makes it easier to ride all day.
The Griso makes a great touring bike, no fairing but I use extreme manliness to compensate..

A good seat is hard to find. I had Pirate upholstery in Kingston NY do mine.  They cut out the tool box area and extended the pilot's perch back while raising and flattening it.  On long rides I can slide around to keep away cramps.  1" lower pegs for me too.

Iron Butt style!!  Love it!

In all seriousness though, doesn't it have a 5 gallon tank in total including reserve?  I would hope it should get at least 40 mpg, similar to the Norge?  Would hope to be able to eventually get 175 before tanking up...every 125 will be a royal pain the arse, as I can squeeze out 220 to 250 on the Norge.

Great suggestions...I like that idea of carrying the larger screen for the longer trips...smart idea!

Thanks Dean...indeed this Griso does have the side carriers and rear carrier already installed, plus the side bags and a rear soft bag.  So from a bag perspective, I'm set...looking at the fairings, pegs and seat as then the most likely modifications if this becomes a permanent member of the Guzzi stable!

Many thanks all for the suggestions!

I have a 4v griso (why do they call one an 8V and the other a 2V?) and my light comes on around 125 miles with EXACTLY 32 miles left after the light comes on taking it easy. There is no 'reserve' just pre-fuel light and post fuel light riding modes. I don't think I ever was close to 5 gallons on fill. I would plan on 125 mile range with a buffer in the fuel light. I always start hunting for fuel when the light comes on.

Thanks Kirb...would you consider that 125 to be done at normal driving or more aggressive driving.  I'll have to get thru a few tanks to get used to this much shorter range.  It is a bummer there is no gas gauge, just the fuel light...so I wonder if the mileage on the Griso is closer to 30 mpg rather than 40 mpg.

STuff to learn...

Agreed on the valving nomenclature...funn y stuff. 2v = 4V overall, 4v= 8V overall...at least it's not a 3 valve Griso Trumpet or a 4 valve Griso French horn!

They call them that so that statements like yours won't be ambiguous. Which one do you have?

I have a 2V, and get 45 mpg on the Interstate, using cruise control. Less when having fun. YMMV.

I've added a small Puig screen. Fine for speeds up above 150 kmph.
Added a small luggage rack, to strap a duffle bag on. There's also room for a small piece of luggage on the end of the saddle.
By the time the low fuel level light comes on I'm ready for a quick stop. After about 200 km, I think.
Great bike for touring! For those long motorway hauls it'd be nice with cruise control, though.

The Guzzi screen is NLA. The Dart Marlin looks to be a good alternative.

If you use Givi gear, you can get tank rings and other bits from Onur Kuraner. LINKY

I have one of his tank rings and it's good kit.

As for mileage, the stock map is not very economical. Any RPM over 5000 and the 8V goes 'glug glug glug'.

Oh year, I recommend an aftermarket seat. You will get numb bum after an hour or so with the stocker. I have a Corbin.

  :1: on Onur's ring.
The screen I have is a MRA, but too big. I cut it back to put it on the Rosso. The deflector is a wank ( crap idea ) at any speed above 50 mph it causes an annoying wind buffeting noise
Very easy to mount though.

Top Boxes double up for other uses too

So what is the deal with that Griso?  Friend loans it to you with barely any miles.  Inquiring minds (I) want to know...

Well...it's an interesting story.  He first bought/traded his Tiger 800 for a Norge to do long distance rides after he heard how much fun I had on it doing a 2 week / 5000 mile trip.  But the bike was a little too tall for him...so he consigned it.  Another guy bought his Norge and rides with us.  After trading in his Norge, he bought a V7, in the meantime had bought a VFR and restored it.  Found the V7 to be underpowered vs. the VFR and sold it...then bought the Griso.  In the interim, he bought the MOrgan (Green 3 wheeler) and finds that he enjoys riding that more than the Motos...but can't bring himself to sell the VFR.  So the Griso is in limbo land.

So a brand new Griso with only 160 miles was put into my hands to ride for a bit and see if I like it enough to buy it..., so I'm going to put some miles on it over the next couple of months and see if it finds a permanent spot in the garage.  It's a stunning looking bike, and kind of fun to have a roadster as well as the Norge...curious to see if I like it enough to keep it permanently.  It's a 2015, so no roller tappet issue, in a great Red/Black combo.  Just wondering if I have the patience to do another "break in"...and will see if the girlfriend also likes it, as she loves riding on the Norge which is well broken in, all setup exactly the way I like it, and smooth as silk.

Not a bad "problem" to have, right?
