Why do I like to ride?
« on: February 16, 2016, 09:55:22 PM »
Because a motorcycle is a cycle like my bicycle. It makes real and present the safety that I found in freedom as a child; the ability to be somewhere else when the hammer came down at home or at school. Because on a bike I am outdoors. I'm in the world and able to feel the temperature changes and the winds. Because I can smell the damp desert floor and vegetation, the cool pines, flowers in the fields. Because I do not feel separated from all the life around me. because the bike makes the environment the entertainment.

Because a good one is cheap enough that I can actually push the button and ride without a fiscal study.

Because the bike needs me. I do not need major mechanical traumas, but the small things that are simply needed lest the machine fall into a state of disrepair are rewarding in themselves. I need not take it to a crew chief for everything it needs; I can enter into fellowship with my bike.

And that wonderful moment, where I am alone with my bike along some highway. A tiny even huggable machine ticking and popping as it cools while I take a few moments to survey the landscape and stretch my legs.

Why ever would anyone ask that question if they are actually a rider?

I spent about five hours today driving through Mississippi and Louisiana. Desoto National Forest, Columbia, Kokomo, Tylertown, Franklinton.  Miles and miles and miles of mostly smooth two lane asphalt roads winding through fields and pastures with little to no traffic. Aimless riding with no particular destination except eventually to arrive back home. But for every road I took there were several more I could have taken. If the towns I pass through are the dots then there are dozens of ways I could connect those dots traveling on paved back roads. It is difficult to select a "best route" if you eliminate "shortest distance" or "fastest" from the selection criteria. Sometimes I just head out down a road not knowing exactly where I am or where I am going until about two in the afternoon and then I pull off the road and use Google Maps to find my way back home. Other times I use ridewithgps.com to design routes based on satellite views of roads and terrain. What I would like to do is design a route to take me from New Orleans Louisiana to Seattle Washington and back without retracing my route based on "most scenic" daily drives of 300 - 500 miles with little concern for the total length of the trip. Any recommendations for a great US wall map or other methods for doing this?

H.A., that's a very nice explanation you wrote.  For me, a motorcycle ride of any length is much more of an adventure than it would have been in a car.  Cars make me wish the trip were over.  Motorcycles and bicycles make me wish they weren't over so soon.

Most of my memorable rides, especially during unexpected weather in mountains or lost I sure wouldnt remember had I been in a car. Swordds, that is a nice area to roam in. A little farther west is Old Shongaloo. Used to be a good burger stand somewhere around there that I used to stop at.

It's the only thing left for me that isn't work related. And it's cool being a real life Donkey Kong. :bike-037:
