« on: February 18, 2016, 09:38:40 AM »
Thought I'd do a quick filter change on the wifes car.

Screwing the cover back down was such fun.

And THAT falls under the heading of Design Crime.

Were I conducting the sentencing hearing, both the designer and the person who reviewed and approved that setup would be spending their weekends for the next year conducting pro bono air filter changes for owners of that vehicle - a common sentence in my world for that kind of offense.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

Not that easy to see, but the air box hangs behind the engine and under the bulkhead. Removing the airbox lid is a complete PITA because you cant see the bolts. You have to pull the box up off its mountings after removing in and out pipes. Once loose you can tilt it to get access to the bolts which you can hardly see even then, took some time to locate them with ungloved fingers. Guess after doing a couple of these and once I had the engine cover off and other annoying plastic bits out the way I could go in Jedi style blindfolded - because eyesight is not really involved in the job.
Overall takes about same time as a small block filter change but its a dirtier more unpleasant task with a lot more potential for loosing tools or bolts.

I went to check the air filter on my mothers Mercury Milan hybrid and couldn't even find it. I think when it goes in for an oil change I will ask to see it seeing as they are supposed to check it each time.

What's so difficult about changing the air filter on a small block?  On the 1-TB models, it involves unlatching the saddle and removing 4 small screws.

LOL.  Try it on an older 2tb model.  The filter isn't under the seat.  It's kinda between the cylinders and under the tank.
Glad I waited for the 1-TB model.

I was comparing the job to 2tb small block, a job I recently undertook. Air filter change on a 2tb ain't really that bad its just more time consuming than it might otherwise be. anyway as pointed out any issue was resolved with the 1tb.

Regarding the car:

It's a Citroen - French for lemon. Despite the pun it's been a good car.
The difficulty with the air filter - its an mpv, there are issues working on a number of mpv's because engines that were originally designed for other cars are placed in a very confined area right up against a bulk head, underneath the screen. From my limited experience working on cars - mpvs with transverse V6 are the most difficult. Drop the engine to change three of the spark plugs WTF!!!

My son's a mech for Holden's (Aust. for GM). They have a
Korean badge model soft roader called a Captiva - dubbed
Craptiva by the mechs. On the earlier models they had the
fuel filter buried down low on the firewall, you had to remove
numerous bits to get to it, then remove the filter housing so
that you could get it into a position to unscrew/replace the
filter. Took around 2 hrs for a simple filter change, and if your
Timing cover gasket let go (Common) you have to remove the
motor. I think they're designed on Computers by people who've
Never gotten they're hands dirty.

We get that kind of crap badge engineered as Chevrolet and equally distasteful offerings which are supposedly 'Dodge'

To our American friends - If you ever visit the UK don't hire a Dodge or a Chevrolet! It wont be what you were expecting!

My number one favourite automobile of all time. There are many that would occupy second chair. The engineering is superbe.
