New to MG -Still enjoying 1st 500 miles
« on: February 19, 2016, 06:32:13 PM »
I'm getting a good understanding of why you folks like these so much.

I took this photo along the Toccoa this afternoon.

I brought this bike home several years ago, because I can't seem to be able to refuse a good deal on someone else's junk.  It sat in my basement for several years.  One day, I decided to assemble it, to see what I had.  Then, it sat for a few more years.  Just before Christmas, I decided to just get it done.  Lucky me, as it came together without laying out much cash.  The main problem was that the main wiring harness was destroyed, or at least, too screwed up for me to want to work on it.

OK, now I admit the grin factor is pretty big.  I have had and do have a lot of issues.  The rear turn signals broke off.  That's fixed.  The brake and tail lights work sometimes.  I read about a fix for that, but it's hard to believe they're so troublesome.  My shift linkage fell off last night.  Hopefully, the new nyloc nuts will take care of that.  I guess that's really it.  No biggie and big fun.

The bike was out of commission since 2001.  I think there are a couple of recalls that haven't been done.  Is the throttle supposed to have two cables?

Anyway, it's no soulless motorcycle!   :thumb:

Man, I was thinking of calling you today. To see how it was working out. Get back from exercising the bikes and here you are.

Yes, two cables.
That one may have had a rear wheel recall also.

Too bad I waited for the dealer in Dahlonega to close.  It's not quite as simple now.   :embarrassed:

Thanks!  It looks OK for the camera, but the cosmetics need a lot of help.  I'll get to that after I'm confident I have a good runner.  I still have to grease the steering bearings, swingarm bearings, and replace fork oil.  I may have some service items I missed.

GuzziSteve, I'll have to ride out there when it warms up.  The MG goes a lot farther on a gallon than my old Yammie.  After fill-up today, I calculated about 41+ mpg.

Marty,

It's good to see you out riding the EV! I plan to get mine out tomorrow afternoon and take the grandson for a ride. I had to make some passenger footpeg extensions so he can reach them. They don't look real great, but they work well. I really haven't had a chance to ride her much since the fuel issues we were dealing with. Mine and yours look like twins except I have the big, barn door windshield and I leave the rear box on all the time. Maybe I'll see you out and about somewhere this summer.

Good luck.

The "Red Dot" EV's are the best, 1st ones in the US. Mine only has 1 throttle cable, it only faults if you are a lawyer and the airbox is pushed forward too far.

from one red dot to another, congrats!

those tail lights / turn signals are  cluster mess.  What a deal putting together, wiring and all.

........ the bike is a barrel of monkeys.

See you on the road.

I got in a 170 mile ride today.

I "fixed" the tail lights after the last longish ride.  They quit again.  I came home with one lamp burning and no brake lights.

48 mpg!  Wow!

The shift linkage fell off.  A new nyloc nut should take care of that.

I acquired a Corbin seat that was listed on here last week.  Right in the neighborhood and just what the doctor ordered.  My legs are long and the seat makes the bike fit me.

Put more mileage on it before throwing money at in mods.  Your basic bike will take long and far.

True that!  The seat was a bargain and makes the bike infinitely more comfortable.  Now, the tail lights are a serious problem.  They don't stay functioning at all.  I'd like to fix that as cheaply as possible.

The main light.  Brake and running?  If that you can mod one from NAPA.

Yes.  The brake/running lights!  I just started a separate thread.

The stock ones have been known to fail because of the incandescent bulb building up heat plus you are in the south where plastic is more apt to deteriorate because of ozone damage.
