Shift return spring. Eldorado 850.

Anyone replace one?  So far no luck with checking Greg's "This Old Tractor".  I've looked at some manuals that I have and it's kind of sketchy as to where and what to do do.  One instruction was "Replace if needed."       I'm looking at rotating the engine and trans up in the frame and pulling the trans back plate.  Not sure if that would do it for access to the spring.  Any suggestions.  Currently the trans is stuck in 1st and/or 2nd w/neutral.

If you have the engine rotated forward with the trans. pointed upwards, 10 minutes more will have the transmission out and on the bench. I'd rather do it on the bench than in the frame.

Like Charlie says, remove the trans from the bike and do it on the bench. Remove the rear wheel, swing arm, battery tray and tool boxes. Make sure you remove the rear brake light switch too, it can get crushed when getting the trans out of the frame. The bike will sit on the center stand and front wheel, I find it a little easier to get the trans out if you put a block of wood and a jack under the rear of the oil pan and raise it up a couple inches. It's a good time to inspect the U joint too.

The shifter spring on the Ambo was located outside the tranny and as far as I know it never broke. The spring used to cost 75 cents, but could ruin a 5 speed if it wasn't replaced when it broke

Yep. Even if it does break (after 45 years) it's a lot easier to replace.

As mentioned above, it's an easy job once you have the transmission on the bench. I wouldn't consider doing it any other way. BTW, the spring can be installed two ways. Only one is right.

do yourself a favor and buy/make a tool to remove the output shaft nut (27mm open ended socket with a handle welded on the outside). do not attempt to do the job by pulling the rear cover and all the shafts with it. a fools errand.
