Griso 8V Average MPG and Fuel Question
« on: March 12, 2016, 10:52:31 PM »
Curious what people get for MPG on their 8V Grisos?

I've got 450 miles on it now...averaging 28 mpg...seems low to me, or else the computer is off or this beast is thirsty or diabetic!

One other I notice after riding it, is a very soft venting sound that goes on for about 1/2 hour as vapor works its way out of the tank...sounds like it's coming from below the tank...sort of a soft pfffft for about a second, then does it again 15 seconds later...eventually stops.

I can definitely smell vapors after the last 2 rides, enough so that I left the garage open for a bit to vent...

A few pics from a fun ride today:  Perfect temps all day long!  I didn't notice it at the time, but a cool shadow reflection of the wire wheels on the bridge concrete as the sun was setting behind me.

Gas mileage will improve as the miles rack up. They are very *Tight* at first. Remapping it will yield a significant improvement, (Not to mention better performance.) until you start thrashing it and there isn't a lot you can do about that as when it's working hard it does throw fuel out of the exhaust valves on overlap. Reasonably sane rideng will keep the fuel consumption reasonable. In sensible mode I can get 300km out of a tank easily enough.

Many thanks Pete!  Will keep working it steadily then and rack up the miles on it!

Cheers!

In cruise mode I get ~43 mpg. If I give it the berries, fuel economy plummets to about 35 mpg. Of course, I have a custom map.

Your economy will improve as you rack up the miles. It should get into the mid thirties after a couple of thousand miles. To get really good economy, a new map will be required.

The pfft-ting is (my guess) the vapour recovery system. Bikes outside the US don't have it.

Thanks Beetle - that's good to know on both issues!!

Just curious...if I give it blueberries vs. raspberries...does my MPG differ?

What was the temp outside? I've noticed a marked difference between gas mileage at 40 degrees F vs 60.

absolutely love the griso in that color. The only better color is the tenni green.

Colder temps = denser air= ecu adds extra fuel to maintain afr ratio.

It was about between 65-70 yesterday, super comfortable.  If we could keep it like this all year around it would be great, alas in 3-4 months we'll be up 90/100 again with a slight humidity problem.

Blueberries it is then!!  Appropriate indeed as Today we will be riding Where the blue bonnets are blooming.

I've never experienced major MPG changes due to a temp change of 25-30 degrees, certainly altitude does make a difference, but I'll watch for it nonetheless.

Thanks for all the thoughts and replies here...off for a Norge ride this Sunday with some other marques...

I'll throw a data point out there from my experience with a new 2V and a new 8V Roller Bike.

Both engines did indeed gain about 2 or 3 mpg as there gained mileage, and we're talking thousands, not hundreds.
The 2V would get about 3 or 4 more mpg than the 8V ridden in same method/conditions. My comparison was commuting to work 20 miles, where 90 percent was on an interstate running 80 mph. And riding in the Ozarks at we'll say "a sportingly sane pace", not race mode where hard on brakes and throttle through the curves.
In colder temps, under 40 F, both bikes did indeed drop significantly in mpg, say around 4 to 5 mpg. Note: I did the metallic paste in the temp sensor hole on the 2V as Pete recommended, but I really couldn't tell a difference in performance or mpg, probably due to my numb butt dyno.
Both bikes running stock maps and tune (performed by someone that I think knew how to do it right) seemed to get better as they broke in.

BTW, I love that color combination and remember, the Griso is an enthusiast bike and should be enjoyed accordingly! It's only the right thing to do.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

 :thumb: thanks!  Good points!

It is definitely getting a work out thru the gears and revs, and it does jump off the start quite quickly!

As the miles Rack up we'll see how the MPG Changes...it's a fun one to be sure!!

Hey Paul, as you know you went and copied me and bought the very same bike and color too  :thumb:

I bought mine used with around 4800 on the odo.  It's getting better mpg than my previous Stelvio and that makes sense as it is slightly less weight.  I've been keeping track on fuelly (when I remember to log my fill ups) and bike gets roughly 32-36 mpUSg.  It's getting close to what my 1100 Calis used to make and I'm getting more satisfied with the mpg as I go but coming off the little V7 Stone's 200 miles per tank range has been an adjustment.  A little.

My question as per a new map for the bike to get it more efficient is will it lean out the bike and make it run hotter than it already is?

Get past your initial service and then the next one, then checking mpg might be of more value. Between now and then you might do things to it that affect how it runs as well as how you ride it.

It can seem strange that easy riding at lower speeds returns less fuel economy than running at higher speeds but in the first instance you're covering less ground, may be running through the gears more, the typical break-in scenario.

I take note of typical MPG rather than average because the average means little because different days and conditions mean different riding styles. Those cool mid mornings for the 50 mile run for coffee? That means a couple of tankfuls through the Norge in a few days and the fuel economy isn't the greatest. The same distance for BBQ takes different roads at midday, more freeway and returns are higher. No way average MPG means much. Over time though, I know the quick hustles return the mid-40s while the easier rides return mid 40s and up.

Watch that vapor smell though, it shouldn't be enough to make you want to leave the garage unless you're very sensitive to the smell. When you get your initial service, maybe that is a good time to mention it. Of course this depends on how small your garage is but the vapors shouldn't make you want to bug out.

Nice pics BTW.

No. If mapped correctly, it will run cooler and get better economy. Keep in mind that the stock map is trimmed to as close to stoichiometric as possible below 5000 RPM. Above 5000 they're too rich.  Running a properly developed open-loop map (no narrow band trimming) will mean it will run more fuel below 5000 and less above. This 'balanced' map will generally run cooler and give better overall fuel economy.

Thank you again everyone...great insights all the way around!  All points noted and archived in the mental RAM.

The vapor issue is noticeable enough to be checked for sure at service, and since I have the Norge to compare it to which doesn't vent in a similar fashion, so we'll see what comes of this as the miles increase.

The first break in period checkup is at 932 miles I think from the manual...quite a bit longer than the Norge which I think was 650 if I recall back many years ago when I got.   At any rate...it's fun all right...definitely still feels like a "shorter run" bike but I love the light weight and it's smooth as can be.

Cheers!
