1976 Covert wiring and harness installation Help :)
« on: March 27, 2016, 01:26:24 PM »
Happy Easter,

I get to play in the garage a bit on my 1976 (January) V1000 Convert that I bought from a friend mid restoration. I am looking at a box with several wiring harnesses....and none that match exactly the Carl Allison blow up diagram I have....it is a 1975 Convert....European Civilian drawing. The Neck tag says (January 1976)....motor and frame numbers match tag and I don't think there has been any major changes.
I wrote Greg Bender and his site is very helpful with all the photos and direction...but again I cannot seam to figure out first...which diagram to use, second how to identify the harnesses I have...and or if they have been altered.

Buddy Matt said to start at the fuse box and work forward which makes good sense...but I want to be sure I have the right harness before I dive in. There must be someone that knows these bikes like the back of their hand ....but it's not me.

Thank you

Bouna Pasqua,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Lamb for Dinner :)

Any recommendations are certainly welcome.

Ya neither do I
Can someone tell me if  there is a different harness from 1975 to 1976…  and if a January 76 bike might have a different color scheme?
Since I have no photographs of the harness on this bike before it came out maybe someone has a similar model year with photographs and or been through a similar process.

Do guzzi wiring harness always seem to reflect the colors from the drawings or were they not always exact?

Thanks

I've never found Carl's diagrams to be very accurate, at least on the older bikes. You might have better luck using this one:

http://www.thisoldtractor.com/mg_manuals/wiring_i-convert_civilian.pdf

or the one in the owner's manual here:

http://www.thisoldtractor.com/mg_manuals/owners_manual_v1000-i-convert_1977-05_en.pdf

I have used carls diagrams on my t-3 and convert 1977 . Are you MOSTLY   Questioning for the headlamp and Plastic Molex Connectors?   They switch colors from one side to another in many places of the molex inside the headlamp.

I do not think there are substantial differences in the 75-76 wiring.  They are basically T harnesses with the neutral cutout switch wires moved to the sidestand cutout switch.  Some models have 4-way flashers iirc, but that won't matter to the main harness placement.  Just drape the harnesses over the chassis and see which one seems most reasonable by length and location.

Take a clue from the part where the previous owner provided several harnesses to go with your 40-y-o project.

If I were in your shoes, I'd forget using any of the old wiring harnesses and buy new from Greg Bender. Everything comes in a bag labeled with where it goes, correct colors and length. No worries about Bubba being in there screwing around. No worries about breaks in the wire, shorts, corrosion, etc. It'll be the best purchase you ever made for the Convert.

Have you seen these photos:

I'll second Charlie's suggestion. Greg's wiring harness's are second to none and Greg is a top shelf. It will easily be the best money you have spent on the bike. My 1972 Eldo is all the better for it :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Yeah ha ha very funny from the guy that told me "oh just start at  the fuse box and start plugging things in it's no big deal."
I kind of started that idea then look to the diagrams to see if things were making sense and the color schemes were mostly wrong I'm sure I could get 50 to 75% right but that doesn't do me much good. Thanks guys I think I will be ordering from Mr. Bender soon.
$485 bucks for the harness and my electrical problems are gone for good.
