Wear on pushrods, but not where you'd expect.
« on: April 03, 2016, 12:45:24 PM »
This is weird. Replaced my barrels& pistons on my T3 with Gilardoni  replacements last year. Took the heads off one side pre riding season to have a look see and found this alarming wear on both of  the pushrods

When I removed the barrels I saw that the wear seemed to be occurring mid way in the barrel. Looking down the barrel tunnel for the pushrods I noticed this massive "step" in the casting.

The tunnel isn't straight through but has a midway offset that was catching the rods and wearing them.Anyone else had this? Presumably the cure is to get the step removed in a machine shop?
Cheers

thanks Rodekyll.
my first thoughts were it must be gasket related but pretty sure the wear is occurring mid barrel. That said the step doesn't look worn in the photo . i'll have another look tomorrow. puzzling! :undecided:

My Eldo showed the same wear pattern due to gaskets.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

I might replace the cylinders , then put the pushrods in place and see where the wear is occurring .

Someone has used incorrect heads or cylinders in the past.

This comes from buying Guzzi parts on Ebay

I'd like to see your rocker arms - maybe someone mixed in some Loop rockers.

You shouldn't have to take the cylinders to a machine shop. A few minutes of careful work with a round file should take care of the ridge.

using the wrong rocker arm for a given cylinder head and/or head gasket can cause push rod erosion. my buddies was practically cut in half from this set up:

I had exactly the same when I put a new pair of Gilardonis on my MK1 Le-Mans about 15 years ago. All I did was relieve the inside of the pushrod tunnels using a small file. No need to visit a machine shop.

Used a 1/2 round wood rasp on mine. Took a bit of time but did the job. Mine had a whole lot more material to take off than your picture shows that your'n have.

thanks for responses, have to say all parts are original and correct apart from replacement barrels brought from reputable sources. Gaskets too. Further inspection confirms wear is occurring mid barrel on the pushrod tunnel step. As per Acogoff and Doug I'll be at it with a file and will whip off the left hand side for a gander as well.  :thumb:

Did you go with the 88 mm Gilardoni "big bore" kits? With those it's necessary to remove a little cast-in "step", never had to do that with any of the 18 or so standard 83 mm Eldo kits I've installed.

Was the standard size, didn't fancy the big bore kits as wanted to keep the bike as original(or at least easily reversible back to original)  as poss.

I had the same thing on my former T3 Gillardoni cylinders. 45 mins with a round file and fresh gaskets I was back in business. I did buy new old pushrods not sure if it was necessary…
