I listen to that live version of Tumbling Dice at least once a month . Just a little bit naughty , and better than the Stones version IMHO . Waddy Wachtel was no slouch either .

That was Martin Mull doing the intro for Tumblin' Dice. How Many remember "Homewood Tonight"?

Had a part-time job driveing a particially-sighted piano tuner during college.  He'd tune the piano at Armadillo World Headquarters.  Linda would play there regularly during the mid seventies.  She'd roll in for early for a sound check, practice a few numbers,  arrange for catering then stick around to jam with some of the local musicians.

I'd hang around all googly eyed and slack jawed,  eventually Riki (The Guacamole Queen and kitchen manager) would conscript me for an early kitchen shift so I could watch the the show for free.

A great talent, wickedly funny, never pretentious and strikingly beautiful.  The real deal.

Personally think her best stuff was with Nelson Riddle. Do a lookup... worth your time. "When you wish upon a Star" is one that comes to mind.

She could sing opera. She also cut some Mexican music because it was her dad's favorite stuff. She could sing anything.

I have her spanish album" Canciones de mi padre" ( my father's songs) on my MP3 for "riding music" great stuff, that really brings out the range of her voice.

I saw her 40th birthday concert.  Fabulous.  Saw many after that but 40 was special.

Agree with you on that.  I have the "What's New" album.  Her managers felt it would wreck her career to make an entire album of the pre-R&R oldies (What'll I Do, I've Got a Crush on You, and a bunch more.) IMO, not a bad song on the entire album.  She had a gut feel about these songs, and the ability of Riddle to provide the backup.  A hit!

Yes Bob, I've got all three on vinyl.  Riddle is a master of orchestration and he set the perfect scene for her voice.  Can't imagine anyone singing it better.  Certainly nobody as darling as she was!  Not a huge fan of her pop stuff as it didn't do her justice.  The Cancione yes.

I've always been a fan, and agree that she is the real deal, in so many ways.  Even when revealing her Parkinson's diagnosis, she was honest, appreciative of her successes, and managed to retain some of sense of humor.  A real class act, and someone I have always wanted to meet.

Cheers,

The only thing that might make Linda sound nicer is add Dolly & Emmylou for backup!

Did Lowell George ever do a song that didn't kick ass Johnny? Interesting electric table break on that!

She was the surprise artist when the Stones played Tucson in the late 70's. Yup, Tumblin' Dice....Ronstadt and Jagger on stage together.
The multi-channel version of the "What's New" album is ear candy.

An amazing talent. No single style was enough for her and her live performance chops were legion. Saw her in 1977 and pined for two years!
