1000SP Luggage Rack?
« on: April 11, 2016, 01:56:11 PM »
Anyone know of a bolt on, small luggage rack for a '79 1000SP? My Google no find so far. I want to carry a small cooler, nothing else.

Thanks,

Tom

There was a factory rack for the 1000 SP. Probably Harpers has one.

Maybe check with "Gino" he has one mounted on his T3 that is a very clean looking type. I also found a used one like that (not for sale, sorry..) but I found it on Italian eBay about a year ago and have never seen another one until I saw Gino's post the other day. Not sure if those racks made it to this country or not. Maybe ask him to see if he has a bead on one.

The nice thing about those is that the mounting is contained within the grab rail (doesn't mess with the shock supports).

Sorry to send you on a hunt. Good luck!

Thanks to all who replied. After seeing the prices on some of the new stuff, and inspired by recent projects from Charlie, along with comments from Chuck in Indiana and others, I decided to do the Guzzi thing and fabricate something. Let's see, over in the corner is an old luggage rack from a Honda Trail 70 that I might be able to do something with. I have no welding tools, or skills, but I do have a grinder, a hacksaw and a drill press, so let's see. I should have it finished tomorrow and if it's not too bad, I'll post a pic. Now, . . .  if I can just locate a band saw that will cut metal that's in my budget, I'll be a happy camper. I should have started this stuff years ago, but other things got in the way.

Good luck on the project.  Chase Harper has a tail pack with integrated bungee system that would work.

Well, may not look real pretty, but it works pretty well. Should haul a small cooler for me and my grandson on our summer trip. Thanks to all again for your comments.

Yes, very nice. My only reservation is that it may put more downward stress on the rear fender and could cause it to crack. That's what happened to the blue SP on my website.

I thought about that Charlie, but I couldn't find another spot to put the rear brackets. I'll keep a close eye on it and since it won't have much weight on it, hopefully it will be OK. Now, if I could weld, and had that band saw, I could have made a much more stout bracket with no stress on the fender.

And Groover, thanks for the compliment.
